Synopsis

Stephanie Henderson, was involved in a severe car accident on 3/12/04.  Treated at EAMC, UAB and Shepherd Rehab Center in Atlanta. She returned home Saturday, May 29.

Brief

Friday, March 12 at 2:15pm Stephanie (Stevie to her family) was involved in a catastrophic car accident. She swerved off Hwy 147 near AU Fisheries and hit a tree head on. The impact was slightly off center to the passenger side averting instant death. Sun shining, no alcohol or drugs, no other cars involved, no passengers, so the cause is a mystery. Ambulanced to EAMC ER and then medivac'd to UAB. Immediate injuries included shattered right hip (both ball and socket), internal bleeding, punctured right lung, broken right ribs, broken right heel, broken right knee cap, six inch laseration starting below and ending above the right knee, broken toes and severe closed head trauma.

Ten days in UAB neuro ICU during which her spleen was removed and aneurism prevented, she endured two hip surgeries and many smaller though difficult trials; five difficult days in the neuro step down unit and then on to Spain Rehab Center - part of UAB. Staph infected hip incisions sent her to the orthopedic floor during which time we decided and many at UAB concurred that she should be at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta. On Thursday, April 15 she was ambulanced to Shepherd.

The ball on the upper right thigh bone has been removed to alleviate her excruciating pain. A month on the pain is substantially gone. In the coming months she will need her right hip replaced. While at Shepherd, physical, occupational and speech therapy.
