A week of welcome news:

Stevie is “tube” free for the first time since March 12.  Both her PIC tube and catheter were removed mid week.

Her right leg cast was cut long wise allowing it to be used as a removable splint.  Though doctor’s orders are to have it on several hours a day, the nurses are lax.

Pain is substantially reduced.  During a five hour period today, she did not complain about pain once.  Though continuing on percocet every 4-6 hours plus the fentanyl patch, gone are morphine and the continuous whining.

The remaining staples from her last hip operation were removed.  The incisions are healing well and there are no signs of infection.

She is able to get in and out of bed/wheelchair with little assistance, though she tends to forget her physical deficits meaning such is unsafe without assistance.

Those that have visited recently have noted how remarkable her social skills are.  She does seem to rise to the occasion and put on an amazing semblance of normality.

A recurring question is “when can I go home”.

Her release is still targeted for June 1 at which time she will return home and begin outpatient therapy – where, we are uncertain.

The journey goes amazingly well but our destination is far over the horizon:

Her ability to form long term (>5 min) memories remains substantially impaired.  Though reminded daily, she cannot say why she is here and has no recollection of anyone who has visited. Each time she is told of the accident and progression since, she is shocked and dismayed.  Most days when I arrive it is as if she is found after a long period of having been lost and alone.

The fractures in her right hip are healing well. Because a fracture crosses the site the replacement socket will be fitted, the replacement hip must wait until the fractures are completely healed – 3 to 5 months hence.

We are incredibly blessed, both by Stevie’s continued recovery and the kindness, love, prayers and thoughts so many have showered on us.
