Specification Corner

GEORGIA DOT

GDOT is revising asphalt specification Section 828 and Section 400 that are currently under review with our industry partners. The revised asphalt specification is expected to be published in late 2025.

OHIO DOT

Most of the recent changes for OH DOT have been in the realm of simplifying specifications. OH DOT is using AASHTO R 30-24 for short-term oven aging and R 121 Method D for long-term oven aging. We are working on implementing PWL for density (using cores). We finished year 2 of 3 in the implementation and have seen average percent density increase from mid-93's to mid-94'.

UTAH DOT

We continue using our highly modified asphalt mix with a PG 76-34 binder, similar to SMA mixtures but paired with a dense-graded aggregate designed for low air voids. This results in high field densities and excellent compaction in both thin and thick lifts. The pavement is durable, flexible, cost-effective and strong.

VERMONT AGENCY OF TRANSPORTATION

Fully implementing our 2024 Specifications. MSCR to binder grading, requiring 58E-28 for mainline paving, expanding QA to cover all mix quantities, implementing QA for bonded wearing courses, increasing allowable RAP in 19mm NMAS mixes to 25%, and introducing HWT requirements for mix design approval. IDEAL-CT is also under development.
