A recent study defined cross-sectional dimensions for hot-rolled asymmetric steel I-beams (A-Shapes) for potential inclusion in Part 1 of the AISC Steel Construction Manual. Developed to enhance the economy, speed, and efficiency of steel buildings, A-Shapes target medium- to long-span composite floor systems common in residential and commercial construction. Unlike built-up beams, hot-rolled A-Shapes offer a faster, more cost-effective solution for shallow-depth systems using partial composite action. Extensive numerical and experimental research confirmed both rollability and structural performance under construction and service conditions.
