FAQs

ADMISSION

  • What is the application deadline?

We do not have an application deadline per se for master graduate students, but in general, domestic students should submit applications 30 days prior to the first day of class and international students should submit applications 90 days prior.

Ph.D.:  The deadline for Fall semester is January 15 and the deadline for Spring semester is August 15.  There are no Ph.D. admissions during Summer semester.

  • Which semesters are new students accepted?

Students are accepted into the graduate program during fall, spring, and summer semesters.

  • Are letters of recommendation required?

No. This is not required for the graduate or Ph.D. program. However, if you do not meet the minimum requirements for graduate school consider submitting letters of recommendation.

  • What are the minimum requirements for acceptance into graduate school?

A 2.75 GPA from an ABET-accredited engineering or related undergraduate program (math, statistics, physics etc.).

  • If submitting by mail, what address do I send my transcripts/GRE scores/IELTS or TOEFL scores?

106B Hargis Hall, Auburn University, AL 36849

  • Am I required to take the GRE?
Not if you have a 2.75 undergraduate GPA from an ABET-accredited program.

Ph.D. applicants are required to submit a GRE score.

  • Who is in charge of admissions and academic advising in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering?

Domestic and online graduate students – Dr. LuAnn Carpenter

International graduate students and all Ph.D. students – Dr. S’ad Hamasha

  • How can I find out the status of my admission application?

There is no way to find the “status” of your application. The Admissions Department of the Graduate School will send you an email when they receive your documents. The department does not know any additional information. Just make sure that you receive an email confirming receipt of your documents. If you have questions about your application, please email gradadm@auburn.edu, not the department. Once all your documents are in, it takes from several weeks to 1-2 months for your application to be evaluated and during that period.

  • The application system says my application is not complete, but I believe it is. What should I do?

In some cases, our department only requires the application to be completed and the application fee paid as well as unofficial transcripts uploaded. However, the system shows the application as incomplete if you don’t submit a GRE score and official transcripts. The GRE is not required for students with a 2.75 GPA from an ABET-accredited program. We can make an admission decision with unofficial transcripts. The official transcripts must be provided before registering for classes.

  • Is an online and on-campus degree the same?

Yes.

  • How do I transfer credit to Auburn from a graduate program in another institution?

On the graduate school’s website, there is a CTEC form students must complete and any courses requested for transfer credit are placed on this form.

  • I am transferring from another US institution and have been cleared medically there. Do I still have to submit medical forms to Auburn University?

Yes, if you are an on-campus student.  Online students do not have to submit medical forms.

  • Should I supply transcripts from every institution of higher education that I attended, even though my transfer courses are showing on my transcript from my degree-granting institute?

Not if it is a transfer course.

  • May I transfer graduate courses from another institution toward an Auburn graduate degree?

Yes, you may transfer up to 50% of the hours toward the degree. The courses must be evaluated by your advisor.

  • I am an online student and have a hold on my account because I haven’t submitted my medical forms.  Do I have to submit these forms since I won’t be on campus?

Online students do not have to submit medical forms; however, the hold is automatically placed by the system for the medical center, so someone must manually remove it. Please contact the graduate outreach office for help with having this hold removed.

REGISTRATION

  • When registering, how can I tell the difference between on-campus and online classes?

On-campus classes have section numbers such as 001, 002. Online classes have section numbers beginning with the letter D, such as D01, DAB.

  • What if I attempt to register for a course with an INSY prefix and the system won’t allow this?

If you are an Industrial and Systems Engineering student, in general these registration problems can be overcome. Use this link to request being added to a course.

  • The registration system is requesting a pin to register, where do I find this number?

Contact your academic advisor to get this number. In general, graduate students do not require a pin to register; however, in some cases the system will wrongly assign a pin.

  • When is it too late to add a class for a semester?
Students may add classes themselves through the first week of classes each semester. After the first week of the semester, students may no longer add classes themselves. Each department has its own policy on adding classes after the first week, so check with the offering department if you wish to add a class after the first week. Our department allows late adds through the second week of the semester with permission of the instructor and if there are seats in the class, but students may not add themselves; students must see the department advisor. After the second week of classes, we do not allow students to add unless there are highly unusual circumstances.

  • I have a hold on my account from the international office/medical office/graduate school/financial office/etc. and I am not allowed to register for classes.  Can someone register me for my classes so I don’t lose out on the classes I want until I can get the holds cleared?
No, unfortunately you must have the hold cleared by the department that placed it first. No one else can override these holds and register you for classes.

  • How do I find out the prerequisites for specific courses?
Go to the AU Bulletin and look under “Courses of Instruction." The courses are roughly in                alphabetical order by department and within each course listing, the prerequisites are given.

GRADUATE PROGRAM/COURSES

  • How long does it take to complete the program?

This depends on how many courses are taken each semester. For a masters degree, the average time for an on-campus student is three semesters, and the average time for online students is three years. For a Ph.D., the average is around 4 years.

  • How long do I have to complete a graduate program?

Six years for a masters degree; 10 years for a Ph.D. It is possible to take one year off without re-enrolling. After one year, the student must be readmitted to the program.

  • How many courses should I take each semester?

The course load for an on-campus full-time graduate student is nine hours, but students may take up to 14 hours. If a student would like to take more than 14 hours they must have permission from the dean of the graduate school. Online students generally take one to two courses per semester. We recommend one course the first semester.

  • Is graduate seminar required?

Graduate seminar INSY 7950 is required for a Master of Science (non-thesis and thesis options) and Ph.D. but not for Master of Engineering Management.

  • There are several “INSY-related” electives required. What courses satisfy this requirement?

INSY-related courses are courses outside the Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) department that are related to ISE or Engineering Management. Typically these courses are offered in the college of business, math, statistics, or other engineering disciplines. By default, graduate students at Auburn are generally not allowed to register for courses outside their major. You will have to contact the department offering the course or the instructor teaching the course to gain access.

  • Are classes offered in the summer?

Yes, but they are limited. Once admitted please work with your graduate advisor to plan which courses to take in the summer.

  • In what order should I take classes?

You may take classes in any order, there is no prescribed curriculum model. However, we have created sample curriculum models here.

  • How do I change or add a program such as a certificate?

Use this link http://graduate.auburn.edu/current-students/forms-directory/ and fill out either the Domestic or International Student Form to change your curriculum.

  • May I take courses from other departments other than industrial and systems engineering?

Yes, you may take up to three courses toward your degree from other departments. They must be industrial and systems engineering related courses, but we are fairly generous with the interpretation. Check with the department’s academic advisor if you have a question about a course you are interested in.

  • How many hours do I have to be enrolled in to be considered full-time?

Nine hours is considered full-time for a graduate student.

  • If I take an undergraduate class, does that class count in my total hours for being considered full-time?

Yes, undergraduate classes count toward your full-time hours.

  • Do my grades in undergraduate classes count toward my graduate GPA?

No, they do not. However, these grades will show on your AU transcript, so don’t make a bad grade in an undergraduate course!

TUITION
