In an effort to encourage middle school children in the field of food safety and detection, we have created a set of lesson plans. These lessons introduce the students to good and bad bacteria, while teaching them the farm-to-fork chain and how contamination might occur.
These lessons are made to be flexible, with extensions provided. As this is our first effort of this kind, we would love to hear any feedback from teachers who use it. If you would like to request certain topics to be considered for future outreach plans, please let us know. Our contact information can be found on the Contact Us page.
We would also like to thank Melissa Moore, certified secondary science teacher in Alabama, for her efforts to provide guidance and examples for this project.
Content for each lesson can be found below.
The creation of these lesson plans was funded in part by the National Science Foundation under grant CBET-1157962.
