PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES:
  • 2004 - Present: Conference Chair, ASEE-SE Conference - Workshops & research forums for over 150 engineering faculty.
  • 2001 - Present: Co-Director, NSF Training - Workshops for 150 engineering faculty on use of case studies.
RESEARCH INTERESTS:
  • Acoustics, Noise Control, Vibration, Non Destructive Evaluation and Engineering Education: Since 1978, have directed and managed a variety of sponsored research and development projects. Projects have been funded by industries (John Deere, Haldex Brakes Corporation) and government agencies (Indian Space Research Organization, University Grants Commission of India, UNDP, NASA, NSF, DOD, DOE) and totals over $5.4 million. Have authored/edited 18 books, published 7 book chapters, and 140 papers in journals and conference proceedings.
  • Taught most courses in the Mechanical Engineering curricula to over 9,800 engineering students. Supervised 5 Ph.D., 9 postdoctoral, 18 M.S., 12 UNDP sponsored executives from industries, and 1 Fulbright scholar. Developed an integrative, interactive instructional methodology that brings real world issues into engineering classrooms. Obtained funding over $1.4 million from NSF and industries and established the Laboratory for Innovative Technology and Engineering Education (LITEE). Faculty and students from Colleges of Engineering, Business and Education working through LITEE have developed award-winning case studies that integrate engineering theory, design and practice.
  • Engineering Outreach and Technology Transfer: Has lead the Auburn Engineering Technical Assistance Program (AETAP) effort from 1996. As Director, Dr. Raju has been working with faculty and students of the College of Engineering in providing technical assistance and technology transfer to industries in Alabama. During the last 6 years this unit conducted 719 projects providing technical assistance to industries. 32 faculty members and over 4000 undergraduate and graduate students were involved in these projects. AETAP operations are funded from NSF, NASA, NIST, and Alabama Cooperative Extension Service, Auburn University and company specific projects. Total funding of 3.4 million dollars was generated under Dr. Raju's leadership.

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES: Dr. Sankar's research on improving engineering and business education by using research methodologies has been well recognized by the award of six National Science Foundation grants totaling $1.1 million. He brings first-hand knowledge of the real-world from outreach activities to enhance research and education experiences of students. He directs the Laboratory for Innovative Technology and Engineering Education for Business Students and his work has had significant impact on improving the higher-level cognitive skills of more than 10,000 engineering and 7,000 business students. He has published more than 60 articles in referred journals including the MIS Quarterly, Management Science, European Journal of Engineering Education, Decision Sciences Journal of Innovative Education, Journal of STEM Education: Innovations and Research, IEEE Transactions on Education, Information Technology and Management, Journal of AMCIS, Journal of Engineering Education, Journal Creatividad Education Y Desarrollo, Project Management Journal, Decision Support Systems, The Academy of Management Executive, Engineering Management Journal, and the Journal of Global Information Technology Management. He was the third-place winner of the Society for Information Management 1990 Paper Award, first-place winner of the 1995 Decision Sciences Instructional Innovation Education Awards Program, the 1997 American Society for Engineering Education Instructional Unit Award, and 1999 American Society of Mechanical Engineering Curriculum Innovation Award.

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES: Responsible for developing and implementing the BellSouth Minority Engineering Program for undergraduate and graduate engineering students in their transition and adjustment into the Auburn engineering environment; also assists in the recruitment of minority faculty and works with engineering departments to develop retention programs for new minority faculty.
