Huaguo Zhou, the Elton Z. and Lois G. Huff Professor of civil and environmental engineering at Auburn University, co-authored a handbook aimed at helping state Department of Transportation offices reduce the risk of wrong-way driving crashes. On Heisman Drive within Auburn's campus, Zhou supervised the installation of a wrong-way alert system that triggers bright red LED lights when it detects a vehicle moving in the wrong direction. He noted that this system has detected several hundred instances of wrong-way driving.
Civil Engineering professor co-authors wrong-way driving handbook
Huaguo Zhou, the Elton Z. and Lois G. Huff Professor of civil and environmental engineering at Auburn University, co-authored a handbook aimed at helping state Department of Transportation offices reduce the risk of wrong-way driving crashes. The "Wrong-Way Driving Solutions Handbook," released in August, will be distributed to all 50 state Department of Transportation offices. Zhou said the handbook is the first to target reducing wrong-way driving crashes.

AUTRI Director earns prestigious Steinberg Award
At its recent September conference in La Jolla, California, the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) honored Larry Rilett, director of the Auburn University Transportation Research Institute (AUTRI), with its prestigious Steinberg Award, which annually recognizes “an individual who has made remarkable contributions to transportation education and research.”

Shiqiang Zou, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering (CEE) and Michael Perez, associate professor in CEE, are collaborating with the University of South Alabama on a three-year, $1.3 million project to upgrade geotextiles to filter excessive nutrients from stormwater runoff into the Gulf Coast ecosystem.
CEE assistant professor and Stormwater Facility part of $1.3M grant
Shiqiang Zou, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering (CEE) and Michael Perez, associate professor in CEE, are collaborating with the University of South Alabama on a three-year, $1.3 million project to upgrade geotextiles to filter excessive nutrients from stormwater runoff into the Gulf Coast ecosystem. Auburn University has been awarded $420,000 as part of the grant. Other collaborators include Wake Forest University and Mobile Baykeeper.
