Software Engineering Co-Op Story: Campus Web Solutions
Cole Cordle
Software Engineering
What company or organization did you co-op with and where are they located?
Campus Web Solutions in Auburn
How did you identify and apply for your co-op? Are there any specific resources you used to find the opportunity (i.e. Handshake, career fairs, other recruitment events)?
Handshake to schedule the interview
What was the application process like?
Provided a resume, cover letter, and transcript and signed up for an interview through the university with Handshake
Tell us about your co-op experience. What types of tasks and projects did you engage in? Was there a particular project or part of the experience you learned the most from?
At this job, we did full stack web development to maintain many of Auburn‘s websites. This taught me a lot about how to apply what I learned in class in the real world. Working on Auburn’s student ticketing website helped a lot because I got to learn how the tools we learned about in class actually relate to real world scenarios including database integration and other programming principles.
In what ways did your co-op experience help you prepare for your next destination after Auburn?
This experience allowed me to be able to see the process of Sulphur development all the way through instead of breaking it down into chunks as we learned in class. I believe this gave me a full scope of how projects are worked on in the real world.
In what ways did your coursework or other experiences at Auburn prepare you for your co-op work experience? Are there specific topics or skills you learned from classes that you put into practice on the job?
The general principles I learned about object-oriented programming in my couple years at college really helped me hit the ground running when I started this job. Once I got further into my database class helped a lot as well.
Do you have any advice for other students seeking a co-op experience?
Go to everything that the CDCR hosts. Especially career fares because you can get great experience even if you don’t get a job through that.
