facilitating the academic success of black women

SOTA’s Writing Retreat
August 2010
Location - TBD

SOTA’s Inaugural Writing Retreat was held on April 10-13, 2008 in Danbury, CT at Western Connecticut State University…
It was a great success!!!

The purpose of this inaugural event was to assist SOTA members and other sisters within the academy with their writing endeavors - including dissertation, manuscripts, or articles. Based on the individual’s research interests, sisters were placed in writing circles that consisted of 3-4 other Black women.
They had the responsibility of creating draft documents for publication as a group, with the support of a facilitator, prior to attending the symposium. During the weekend’s writing and presentation activities, they continued with or completed this writing project with the support and motivation of their writing circle members and all other symposium attendees.

This weekend was a “process and product driven weekend with a networking twist.”

Quote from a 2008 Writing Retreat participant…

“Have another retreat next year…this was one of the most powerful and valued experiences I have had. The ability to meet and hear of other sisters' projects – dynamic… I had high need to connect with other women in this way. So necessary--my heart is full because of the gift this retreat is. Thank you!”
