|Stone, right, presents Smart with the award|
Stephen Smart, a senior in civil engineering, is this year’s recipient of the Stone Leadership Award, an honor that recognizes undergraduate students in the department for their leadership abilities. The award is funded through the Stone Fund for Excellence, established by Jeffrey I. and Linda J. Stone for the Department of Civil Engineering.
Smart serves as president of Auburn University’s chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB), an organization that partners with disadvantaged communities to improve their quality of life through implementation of environmentally sound engineering projects. He has been involved with the organization since 2009, the chapter’s inaugural year. Smart has made two trips to Quesimpuco, Bolivia, where a team of Auburn students is working with residents to improve crop irrigation and construct other systems in the community.
Smart and his team designed a solar-heated shower for a local school in Quesimpuco and demonstrated a technique for the high school students to create charcoal from organic waste. Inspired by the Auburn students’ work in engineering, the local high school students formed a club called Future Engineers of Bolivia, which Smart and EWB continue to support by sending videos of science experiments and demonstrations to supplement the students’ math and science classes.
