The Alabama Center for Paper and Bioresource Engineering (AC‐PABE) is a dynamic responses organization focused on the needs of the pulp, paper and allied industries. The missions of AC‐PABE are to:

  1. Provide undergraduate, graduate and continuing education in science and engineering relevant to the needs of the pulp, paper and allied industries
  2. Conduct fundamental and applied research in line with the industry’s R&D agenda
  3. Develop and transfer technology to the industry consistent with the industry’s technology vision
  4. Provide timely technical information to the operating sector of the industry

The center is well‐recognized for its unique capabilities to partner with the industries through the Auburn Pulp and Paper Foundation.

About AC-PABE

Established in 1985, the original purpose of the Alabama Center for Paper and Bioresource Engineering (AC-PABE) was to facilitate, and conduct programs of research and education for the benefits of the pulp and paper industry. AC-PABE and the Auburn Pulp and Paper Foundation ( APPF) have worked together to reach our current position of excellence.

The nation's only pulp, paper & bio-resource research and education center that offers undergraduate curricula with pulp, paper & bioresource specializations for chemical, electrical, and mechanical engineering students, and a multidisciplinary research environment for engineering graduate students and faculty.

Research

The Alabama Center for Paper and Bioresource Engineering, which is hosted within the Department of Chemical Engineering, has a complete, controlled-conditioned, wettest laboratory for chemically and physically evaluating pulp and paper. The center also has a pilot sized microfluidizer capable of producing both micro and nanofibrillated cellulose.

Technical Services

The service center, which occupies approximately 4000 sq. ft., has the capability to perform a lab-scale processing of forest-based biomass, pulp and paper, a controlled-conditioned laboratory for chemically and physically evaluating pulp and paper.
