Industrial and Systems Engineering students and faculty are eligible for scholarships and awards through ISE as well as numerous external organizations:

American Society of Safety Professionals - ASSP

Scholarships: Academic scholarships are available for students within the occupational safety and health field, preparing for their careers or looking to supplement their careers with additional college coursework. Applications for ASSP Foundation academic scholarships are accepted October through February. 

Programs of study must be either directly related to the occupational safety and health field or will be utilized to support the occupational safety and health field. This can include a variety of degrees. If your degree is not directly related to occupational safety and health, you will be asked to clarify how you will be using your degree to support the field of occupational safety and health. 

ASSP Foundation Professional Education Grant Program: Professional education grants are available for individuals within the occupational safety and health field (either students or professionals) who need financial support for certification expenses, conference attendance, webinar attendance, workshop attendance, and similar professional development support. Applications for ASSP Foundation professional education grants are accepted year-round, with awards made on a rolling basis, based on availability.

 

National Safety Council - NSC

Scholarships: Scholarships announced in May. Applications open in April.

  • Women in Safety Scholarship: The Women in Safety Scholarship provides a renewable scholarship for women studying safety in the workplace. Any woman enrolled in a post-secondary program is eligible. The Women in Safety Scholarship is a cash award of $5,000, renewable for up to four years. 
  • NSC Diversity in Safety Scholarship Program: NSC has created a scholarship program that works to increase diversity in the field of occupational health and safety, while also building a workforce trained and ready to fill the growing need for these individuals. BIPOC individuals, people with disabilities and people who identify as LGBTQIA+ who are seeking post-secondary education leading to a career in environmental, health and/or safety. 
  • Lorraine Pack Memorial Scholarship: Lorraine Pack mentored women of all ages and inspired those around her to care for each other’s safety and protect the environment in which we live and work. She embraced the Campbell Institute’s focus on solving global environmental, health and safety challenges through innovation and research. This scholarship allows Lorraine's legacy to live on by inspiring young women to pursue careers in EHS. 
  • NSC Safety Congress & Expo Scholarship: This program provides student members full funding to attend the NSC Congress & Expo, the world's premier safety conference.  
  • Billy D. Young Memorial Scholarship: The NSC Construction & Utilities Division provides a scholarship each year in honor of Billy D. Young, a founder of the division.  
  • Certificate Assistance Program: A part of the National Safety Council Scholarship program, the Certificate Assistance Program helps support individuals on a safety career path obtain their NSC Advanced Safety Certificate. Through the ASC program, NSC teaches best practices to those who are transitioning into a safety career or are currently in safety roles within their organization and need additional professional development to create a more proactive process for safety and health. 

 

Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences - INFORMS

Faculty Awards:  

  • Daniel H. Wagner Prize for Excellence in the Practice of Advanced Analytics and Operations Research: This prize emphasizes the quality and coherence of the analysis used in practice. Deadline May 1st. 
  • Donald P. Gaver, Jr. Early Career Award: The purpose of the award is to support creative and diverse work in operations research in the early career of the recipient.  
  • Frederick W. Lanchester Prize: This prize is awarded for the best contribution to operations research and the management in the past five years. For a group of publications, at least one publication of the group must have been published during that same five-year period. Deadline June 15.
  • John von Neumann Theory Prize: Awarded annually to a scholar (or scholars in the case of joint work) who has made to theory in operations research and the management sciences. The award is $5,000, a medallion and a citation. Deadline June 1st.
  • Philip McCord Morse Lectureship Award: Recognizes and honors a lecturer of operations research and management. Nomination Deadline March 30.
  • Prize for the Teaching of the OR/MS Practice: Recognizes a teacher who has succeeded in helping his or her students to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to be effective practitioners of operations research or the management sciences.  
  • Saul Gass Expository Writing Award: Honors an operations researcher/management scientist whose publications demonstrate a consistently high standard of expository writing. The winner will receive $2,000 and a framed certificate that includes a brief citation at the INFORMS Annual Meeting. Submission Deadline June 30.

 

Student Awards:  

  • Doing Good with Good OR - Student Paper Competition: Competition to encourage student research and practice that has societal impact. Submission Deadline May 31.  
  • George B. Dantzig Dissertation Award: The George B. Dantzig Award is given for the best dissertation in any area of operations research and the management sciences that is innovative and relevant to practice. Submission Deadline June 30
  • George Nicholson Student Paper Competition: Held each year to identify and honor outstanding papers in the field of operations research and the management sciences written by a student. Submission Deadline June 2.
  • Judith Liebman Award: Recognizes outstanding student volunteers who have been "moving spirits" in their universities, their student chapters, and the Institute.Nomination Deadline June August 1st. 
  • Undergraduate Operations Research Prize: Competition is held each year to honor a student or group of students who conducted a significant applied project in operations research or management science, and/or original and important theoretical or applied research in operations research or management science, while enrolled as an undergraduate student. Application due June 30.

  • Albert G. Holzman Distinguished Educator Award: Outstanding educators who have contributed to industrial engineering.  
  • Innovations in Education Competition: Outstanding innovation in the design or presentation of an accredited IE, ISE, IEOR, or similar engineering curriculum.  
  • Dr. Hamed K. Eldin Outstanding Early Career IE in Academia Award: Individuals in academia who have shown outstanding characteristics.

  • Frank and Lillian Gilbreth Industrial Engineering Award: Individuals who distinguished themselves through contributions to mankind. 
  • George L. Smith International Award for Excellence in Promotion of Industrial Engineering: Individual who has made significant and long-standing contribution to the profession and exemplifies role model behavior as "goodwill ambassador." 
  • IISE Award for International Impact in Industrial & Systems Engineering: Recognizes an individual member who has made significant contributions to the discipline of Industrial & Systems Engineering as a global leader.

  • Annual Conference Implemented Solutions Award (formerly called the I5 Award): For an individual who implemented ways to improve their organizations with ideas learned from the previous year's conference.

  • Distinguished Achievement Award: Awards granted by the IISE Board of Trustees to recognize noteworthy achievement.

  • Award of Merit: Awarded to an outstanding SME members who, in the judgment of the
    International Awards & Recognition Committee, have made valued, balanced contributions to
    SME's professional activities and growth.
  • Donald C. Burnham Manufacturing Management Award: The Donald C. Burnham Manufacturing
    Management Award recognizes exceptional success in the integration of the infrastructure and
    processes of manufacturing through innovative use of human, technical and financial resources.
  • Eli Whitney Productivity Award: The Eli Whitney Productivity Award is awarded for distinguished
    accomplishments in improving capability within the broad concept of orderly production.
  • Joseph A. Siegel Service Award: The Joseph A. Siegel Service Award is awarded to an SME
    member for significant and unique contributions that benefit SME. This award is the only
    International Honor Award that must only be conferred upon SME members. 
  • Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award: Recognizes innovators, age 35 and younger,
    in both academia and industry for exceptional accomplishments, such as technical publications,

  • SME Education Award: The SME Education Award honors the educator most respected for the

    students to enter the profession of manufacturing. 
  • SME Frederick W. Taylor Research Medal: The SME Frederick W. Taylor Research Medal honors
    significant published research leading to a better understanding of materials, facilities,
    principles, operations and their application to improve manufacturing processes.
  • SME Gold Medal: The SME Gold Medal recognizes outstanding service to the manufacturing
    engineering profession in technical communications through published literature, technical
    writings or lectures. 
  • Honorary Membership: May be conferred upon an individual of recognized ability and stature
    who has, by voluntary action, contributed their substantial skills and talent to accomplish the
    goals of SME. This award is one of the most prestigious honors presented by SME and is
    reserved for those exhibiting professional eminence among manufacturing engineers. Any group
    of five or more voting members of SME may nominate a candidate for Honorary Membership by
    presenting, in writing, the reasons for such nomination to the president of SME. 
  • Excellence in Composites Manufacturing Awards: These annual awards recognize companies
    that have demonstrated dedication and ongoing contribution to further advance the design and
    development of technology used in the manufacturing of advanced composites. 
  • Jud Hall Composites Manufacturing Award: Presented annually to an individual who has
    contributed to composites manufacturing or tooling technology through leadership, technical
    developments, patents or educational activities. 
  • AM Start-Up Technology Award: Have you developed a technology or application that solves an
    existing problem or unique approach? Does it have potential to serve a large or niche market?
    Tell us more! If your company has been registered to do business within the last 3 years at
    RAPID + TCT and attending the event, then you are eligible to apply. Applicants should provide a
    300-word summary about the technology and how it is or can be used, market potential, and

  • SME President's Award: The SME President’s Award is given to a Chapter or Technical
    Community member who has gone above and beyond in service to their fellow members. The
    Chapter and/or Technical Community may decide what criteria will be used in their member
    unit, keeping the goal of recognizing an outstanding contribution to SME and the member unit’s
    success by the member. 
  • SME College of Fellows: Since 1986, the SME College of Fellows has honored those members
    who have made outstanding contributions to the social, technological and educational aspects
    of the manufacturing profession. This is a highly prestigious honor that can only be earned
    through years (20 or more) of dedication and service. Nomination Deadline: December 1st
  • S.M. Wu Research Implementation Award: The NAMRI | SME S.M. Wu Research Implementation
    Award, presented by NAMRI | SME, recognizes outstanding original research presented as a
    paper at the annual North American Manufacturing Research Conference (NAMRC) and
    subsequently, upon implementation, had a significant commercial and/or societal impact.

  • M. Eugene Merchant Manufacturing Medal of ASME/SME - Awarded to an individual who has
    had significant influence and responsibility for improving the productivity and efficiency (either
    by research or by implementation of research) of the manufacturing operation(s).

  • AM Industry Achievement Award: The AM Industry Achievement Award, established in 2008 by
    SME's Additive Manufacturing Community, was developed to recognize an individual or team for
    outstanding accomplishments that have had significant impact within the additive
    manufacturing industry or in any industry through the application of additive manufacturing
    technologies. As the name suggests, the award recognizes achievements that have been
    implemented or deployed in a commercial/industrial environment rather than research
    investigative work. Winners are selected with consideration for the scope and scale of benefits
    realized and the potential future impact their work will have on the industry.

  • Annual Chapter Recognition: What is the definition of chapter success? While this means
    different things to different people, we have to look at what SME states about its purpose,
    which is to advance manufacturing and attract future generations. Submission Deadline: February
  • Aubin AM Case Study Award: Looks to recognize innovative case studies using AM technologies.
    The purpose of the award is to recognize outstanding use cases of AM adoption and
    implementation and to provide inspiration to others in their journey of AM application.
    Submission Deadline: February
  • Digital Manufacturing Challenge: This annual competition invites student designers to use their
    imagination to arrive at an innovative design, which exploits the geometric capabilities of direct
    digital manufacturing (DDM) to the fullest. Entries are welcome from college/university students
    and high school students; both categories are judged separately. Winners are recognized at
    SME's annual RAPID + TCT event. Submission Deadline: February
  • Excellence in Manufacturing Training Award: The SME Excellence in Manufacturing Training
    award honors a manufacturer who demonstrates an exceptional commitment and dedication to
    upskilling the workforce, enhancing talent, and preparing new and incumbent employees for a
    successful career in the manufacturing industry. Submission Deadline: February 5th
  • David Dornfeld Manufacturing Vision Award: This award recognizes outstanding vision and
    leadership within the manufacturing community. Submission Deadline: April
  • Distinguished Faculty Advisor Award: This award is offered to student chapter faculty advisors in recognition of their service to SME and their student chapter(s) in advancing manufacturing
    knowledge, education and SME's vision/mission/purpose. Submission Deadline: May


Student Awards/Scholarships:
With more than 60 distinct scholarship programs, the Foundation provides merit and need-based scholarships, issues renewing and one-time awards, and seeks applications from all eligible students, including but not limited to young women and underrepresented communities. The Foundation has awarded 18 million to over 5,000 future industry leaders since 2005 and awards nearly a million dollars in scholarships each year.

Scholarship applications are accepted annually from November 1 – February 1. By submitting one application, you will be considered for every scholarship for which you are eligible. Awards range from $2,500 – $20,000.

 

Human Factors and Ergonomics Society - HFES

Each year, Full and Emeritus members in good standing may nominate worthy candidates for Society awards. With the exceptions of The William C. Howell Young Investigator Award and The Bentzi Karsh Early-Career Service Award, nominees are not required to be members of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.  Candidates for awards may self-nominate or colleagues may submit nominations on their behalf.     

Supporting documentation for each award shall include, at minimum, a copy of the candidate’s curriculum vitae or résumé and 2 letters of support.  When submitting, combine all materials in a single PDF and ensure the letters of nomination and support precede the nominee's CV.

Student and Student Chapter Awards: Application Deadline June 30

  • Student Member with Honors Award: Acknowledges students who have made an outstanding contribution to the discipline or to HFES during their tenure as a student. 
  • Student Chapter Awards: Recognizes chapters for their contributions and achievements (both the number and quality of activities) across a number of categories as listed below, with emphasis on demonstrated excellence in a specified number of areas. The levels of recognition are as follows:
    • GOLD requires activity in at least eight categories with excellence in at least five categories, and at least 50% of the student members being HFES Student Affiliate members.
    • SILVER requires activity in at least five categories with excellence in at least three categories, and at least 40% of the student members being HFES Student Affiliate members.
    • BRONZE requires activity in at least three categories with excellence in at least two categories, and at least 25% of the student members being HFES Student Affiliate members.


Faculty Awards: Deadline Submission April 5

  • Hal W. Hendrick Distinguished International Colleague Award: Recognizes a non-U.S. citizen who has made outstanding contributions to the human factors/ergonomics field. Candidates are considered based on the significance of their contributions and their worldwide recognition within and outside the HF/E profession.
  • Paul M. Fitts Education Award: Recognizes a person who has made exceptional contributions to the education and training of HF/E specialists.
  • A.R. Lauer Safety Award: Candidates' accomplishments should be related to safety or safety training technology as demonstrated by research or application of HF/E principles. Emphasis should be placed on both programmatic and recent contributions to the field of endeavor.
  • Alexander C. Williams, Jr., Design Award: Recognizes individuals or groups of individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the conception or design of any product, service, or system that has
    had a significant impact on users and exemplifies the excellent use of empirical human
    factors/ergonomics design principles.
  • Jack A. Kraft Innovator Award: Honors an individual or groups of individuals for significant efforts to extend or diversify the application of HF/E principles and methods to new areas of endeavor.
  • Oliver Keith Hansen Outreach Award: Recognizes members and nonmembers who engage in
    significant activities that broaden awareness of the existence of the human factors/ergonomics profession and the benefits it brings to humankind.
  • The William C. Howell Young Investigator Award: Provides an award plaque to a member of HFES for demonstrating outstanding contributions to HFES through professional scientific contributions as a young investigator.
  • Human Factors Prize: Recognizes excellence in HF/E research through an annual competition
    in which authors are invited to submit papers on a specific topic for that year. The topic is
    selected by the editor in chief in consultation with a Board of Referees chaired by the immediate
    past Human Factors editor. 

 

Additional Awards: Deadline Submission April 5

  • Best Student Paper in Ergonomics in Design Award Sponsored by Dr. Brian Peacock: The purpose of the award is to recognize excellence in contributions by graduate or
    undergraduate students in the area of ergonomics in design.
  • The Alphonse Chapanis Best Student Paper Award: Presented to a student or students for outstanding human factors research conducted while enrolled in an appropriate academic program and presented as a paper or poster at the HFES Annual Meeting.

 

Material Handling Education Foundation

Student scholarships: Application Deadline January 31st

The Foundation offers scholarship award opportunities to undergraduate students who are pursuing a material handling, logistics or supply chain career. The student should clearly demonstrate dedication to achieving excellence, strong leadership skills, potential for future growth as a leader and persistence in the pursuit of education. Both traditional university undergraduate students and employees and family members of industry associations and member companies may apply for one of the many scholarships offered by the Foundation.

Scholarship awards range from $1,500 to $6,000 and must be used for costs relating to tuition, fees and books associated with attending school full-time. One application allows students to compete for one of the multiple scholarships offered by the Foundation. Scholarships are one-year awards, and former recipients may re-apply each year if they continue to meet the eligibility requirements.

  • Norman L. Cahners Industry Award: Lifetime achievement award that will be awarded only when a sufficient body of documentation has been presented to convince a panel of judges that an award should be made to an individual, corporation or organization that has contributed to the industry in an extraordinary way and to an extraordinary degree over a sustained period of time.
  • Reed-Apple Education Award: Awarded to an individual, corporation or organization that has contributed to material handling and logistics education in an extraordinary way and to an extraordinary degree.
