Process Plan for Brass Barrel for Cannon
0010 Using a band saw cut a brass bar of 3/4" O.D., or larger, to a over all length of approximately
6 "
0020 Clamp the bar of brass in the lathe chuck with 1" of the bar in the chuck teeth.
0030 Next face off the free end of the bar using a general purpose cutting tool. Remove .1" of material.
0040 Using the drill chuck mount a center drill in the tail stock.
0050 Center drill the end of the work piece.
0060 Replace the center drill with a 5/16" drill and drill a hole 4 3/4" deep.
0070 Un-clamp part and place the drilled end of the work piece in the lathe chuck 1".
0080 Square off the face by removing .1" material.
0090 Center drill the new face.
0100 Mount center fixture in tail stock to support work piece while turning down the diameter in the
next step.
0110 Remove material from diameter of work piece using rough cuts until diameter is within 1/32"
from 5/8"
0120 Put small a small taper on the end by the tail stock.
0130 Cut a V groove 1/16" deep, 4 1/2" from face of work piece mounted in center fixture.
0140 Cut a second groove 5/32" deep , 4" from face of work piece mounted in center fixture.
0150 At the same position cut steps by moving the lathe tool toward the tail stock .075" and then move
and then move the cutting tool away from the work piece .005". Repeat until tool is no longer
cutting.
0160 Return tool to position at step 0140. Now cut steps in the other direction toward the lathe chuck.
Cut these steps by moving the tool .05" toward the chuck and move the tool out of the work .0125". Start with the tool .0125" out from the bottom of the V groove.
0170 Using a course file, smooth out the steps. Be careful to keep hands and file away from lathe
chuck.
0180 Finish part by cutting through the part 4 ½" from tail stock.
0190 Clamp part length ways in mill vice.
0200 Locate off of butt end of barrel using edge finder. Then travel 1 ¼" toward the drilled end of the
cannon.
0210 Drill a 11/64" hole through the cannon at 1 ¼". Make sure the hole is centered on the barrel.
0220 Ream the 11/64" hole with a .1885" reamer. Use a very slow r.p.m. and clear the flutes several
times while reaming the hole.
0230 Remove part from vice and polish with polishing wheel to remove burrs or nicks.
