Given: Weight of one dozen apples is 5 lb.

Find: Average mass in slug and kg.  Average weight in newtons.

Average Weight in Pounds = 5/12 lb

W = m g     g = 32.2 ft/s2

m = 5/12 lb / 32.2 ft/s2 = 0.01294 lb s2/ft = 0.01294 slug

To convert to kg, use the table in the front of the book.

1 slug = 14.594 kg

m = 0.01294 slug * 14.594 kg/slug = 0.1888 kg

W = m g      g = 9.81 m/s2

W = 0.1888 kg * 9.81 m/s2

W = 1.853 kg m/s2 = 1.853 N  > 1 N
