Risk can be defined as the effect of uncertainty or anything that can compromise the mission. Managing risk is essential to business success in today’s world of high costs, rapid and unpredictable change. Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) can be used in identifying and mitigating risks related to design and processes or products. It is considered one of the ‘core tools’ for the automotive industry.

FMEA is “An analytical methodology used to ensure that potential problems have been considered and addressed throughout the product and process development process.”

FMEA-4th edition, p.2, AIAG

Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) is a practical course that provides an understanding of FMEA’s by using several real world examples to illustrate how to complete an FMEA for design (DFMEA) and for processes or products (PFMEA).

Benefits of properly using FMEA’s include:

Identifying, understanding, quantifying and mitigating risks are key functions of Engineers and Managers.  Failure Mode Effects Analysis is for anyone in engineering, quality, technical, leadership or management positions.  It can be especially beneficial to those who are responsible for design, manufacturing or quality; and, for those in project, process or general business management since all involve identifying preventing potential failures.

The FMEA process involves identifying risks, quantifying potential failures, applying sound engineering or other principles to mitigate or eliminate the risks and follow up to insure the potential failures are minimized or eliminated. Upon completion of this course you should be able to readily transfer the concepts, principles, tools and techniques into your business.

The instructor for FMEA (Davis M. Woodruff, PE, CMC) has over three decades of real world experience with clients on 3 continents and in 35 states. He uses a practical approach based on experience, research and education.

The learning objectives are for participants to:

  1. Review the basic concept of risk management
  2. Know how to create and use DFMEA’s and PFMEA’s
  3. Be able to create and interpret FMEA’s for your business
  4. Learn tips for using FMEA’s
  5. Help comply with industry requirements, i.e., automotive core tools
