The usual responsibilities of an engineer or manager include problem solving and/or process troubleshooting. Using established and logical techniques can improve problem-solving skills. Becoming better problem solvers allows us to become more effective engineers or managers and increases our value to an organization.

Effective problem solving requires an organized approach, knowledgeable problem solvers, teamwork and the appropriate tools. There are a number of recognized approaches in use today. Effective Problem Solving Methods focuses on the basics of problem solving such as how to make a problem statement that helps us find a solution to the ‘right’ problem. Getting to the root cause instead of just treating symptoms is the goal of effective problem solving. Other courses in this series will delve into more of the tools, however in this class we will use the 8D methodology, an organized process for gathering data and information and the ‘3x5 Why’s’ to guide our problem solving approach.

Effective Problem Solving Methods is intended to provide practical information that will enable you and your organization develop and implement an effective approach to problem solving that helps you:

  1. Know how to solve problems using an organized approach.
  2. Understand human error and steps for mitigating errors.
  3. The questions to ask about a problem.
  4. Make more effective problem statements.

It is intended to provide an understanding of problem solving methods by looking into several scenarios and using the methodology to lead to solutions. This class can provide the tools for developing your problem solving skills.
