A team from Auburn University’s Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering recently traveled to Taiwan to explore cutting-edge Industry 4.0 technologies and build international partnerships to support Auburn’s growing efforts in smart manufacturing and advanced systems.
The group included Gregory Harris, department chair; Edward Huang, associate professor; Christian Zamiela, research professor; and Joshua Whiting, research engineer with the Interdisciplinary Center for Advanced Manufacturing Systems.
During the visit, the team toured companies and universities known for innovation in CNC machinery, IoT integration, AI-driven manufacturing, robotics and semiconductor production. Stops included Victor Taichung, RT Link, MITAC Computing, TM Robot, Century Trading and MXIC, as well as visits to the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Yuan Ze University and National Tsing Hua University.
“These visits gave us a firsthand look at how Taiwanese companies and researchers are applying smart manufacturing concepts, along with AI, robotics, digital twin and AR/VR capabilities,” Huang said. “It also opened the door to new collaborations that can directly benefit our research and educational programs at Auburn.”
Harris said the trip demonstrated Auburn’s commitment to expanding its global reach in advanced manufacturing.
“Building these connections is critical for staying at the forefront of smart manufacturing technologies,” Harris said. “Opportunities like this allow us to exchange ideas, identify collaborative research projects and create hands-on learning opportunities that will prepare our students for the future of industry.”
The team hopes the new connections will lead to future research partnerships and expand experiential learning opportunities for Auburn students.
