Top minds recently convened at Auburn University for a series of conversations on how to overcome obstacles to the wider adoption of advanced manufacturing.

More than 100 industry professionals participated in the 6th ASTM International Additive Manufacturing (AM) Center of Excellence (AMCOE) Specialty Workshop, which was hosted by Auburn’s National Center for Additive Manufacturing Excellence (NCAME), a founding partner of the AMCOE.

The workshop brought together leading experts, innovators and industry leaders for a daylong discussion specifically on "Model-Assisted and NDE-Based Qualification Methods for AM Parts.”

Speakers and panelists included researchers, specialists and administrators from the Federal Aviation Administration, NASA, Boeing, GE Aerospace, Oakridge National Laboratory, EOS, America Makes and the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division. Technical chairs included NCAME Director Nima Shamsaei, Philpott-WestPoint Stevens Distinguished Professor of mechanical engineering, as well as subject matter experts from ASTM International

In his opening remarks, Dean of Engineering Mario Eden said the workshop directly aligned with the university’s research priorities and emphasized the "significant strategic investments that have led to Auburn’s rapidly growing reputation as a dynamic hub of advanced manufacturing research.

"The fact that our National Center for Additive Manufacturing Excellence co-organized this workshop is, I think, a clear indication of Auburn's impact in this vital domain.”

Shamsaei agrees.

"As a founding partner and contributor to the ASTM CoE, NCAME has a strong focus on advancing additive and advanced manufacturing through standardization efforts and the qualification and certification initiatives that support these emerging technologies,” he said.

Shamsaei said that, while NCAME is primarily known for its fundamental and applied research, the center also plays a vital role in fostering industry collaboration.”

"Events like these are invaluable," he said. “They bring together the brightest minds from academia, government and industry to tackle shared challenges and accelerate advanced manufacturing. The networking and collaborative opportunities generated are just as crucial as the research itself because they drive the industry’s entire ecosystem forward, ensuring that breakthroughs in the lab translate into real-world solutions."
