A faculty member in the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering was recently named a fellow by the Society for Modeling and Simulation International (SCS).

Professor Levent Yilmaz’s work focuses on advancing the theory and methodology of modeling and simulation with applications to model-driven computational discovery in a broad range of scientific and engineering disciplines.

“Being honored as an SCS fellow and joining a small group that includes the titans of our disciplines who were instrumental in establishing the foundations of modeling and simulation is truly motivating and inspirational,” he said.

The grade of fellow recognizes unusual distinction in the profession with an outstanding record of accomplishments in advancing the theory, methodology and applications of modeling and computer simulation, according to the SCS website.

In the early 2000s, Yilmaz worked alongside his colleagues to develop the foundations of agent-directed simulation, which involves exploring the synergies among distributed artificial intelligence, multi-agent systems and computer simulation.

This new area has significantly extended the role and utility that computational intelligence plays in simulation modeling, as well as the use of simulation modeling in exploring self-organizing and adaptive intelligent systems, qualifying Yilmaz to join the exclusive list of fellows known for their groundbreaking research.

“Members of this group have been at the forefront of advancements in the field, making computational modeling as the emerging language of science and engineering in the 21st century,” he said.

Yilmaz’s other accomplishments include receiving Auburn University’s External Consulting Award in 2010, the Distinguished Professional Achievement Award from SCS in 2011 and the Distinguished Service Award from SCS in 2012 and 2016, among others.

Established in 1952, SCS serves more than 150 countries and is the world’s premier professional society devoted to modeling and simulation.
