Matthew Preisser, ’18 biosystems engineering, was named the Department of Biosystems Engineering’s outstanding student for 2018. He plans to blend his background in the field with public affairs to address environmental and societal issues in the future.
“I grew up in Crescent Springs, Kentucky, where I spent a great deal of my time volunteering and working at the Newport Aquarium. Always having an interest in aquatic life, I earned my advanced open water diving certification to further immerse myself in these ecosystems. Having personally seen the damage that is happening to coastal environments, I desired to use my skills and knowledge to educate others on the importance of responsible stewardship. I chose biosystems engineering at Auburn University as it has a unique combination of science and engineering that would allow me to use and protect the environment in ways that benefit communities of people all around the world. I am incredibly honored to represent the Department of Biosystems Engineering with this award, and I am truly appreciative of the entire faculty and staff of this department for preparing me for a successful future. Upon graduating in May, I will be attending the University of Texas at Austin for the dual master’s degree program in environmental and water resource engineering and public affairs, and I hope to one day work in the public and non-profit sector to address environmental and societal issues at the local, national and international levels.”
