Jeffery Fergus, professor in Auburn University’s materials engineering program, has been appointed to the Metals, Minerals and Materials Society (TMS) Board of Directors. Fergus will begin serving a three-year term as professional development director starting Feb. 19, 2014, after the passing of the gavel ceremony at the TMS Board of Directors meeting in San Diego, Calif.
As professional development director, Fergus is responsible for representing and informing TMS members in matters of professional registration, education and accreditation. The position also requires the development and implementation of short and long-range goals in professional development issues for the Society. Fergus will also work in cooperation with TMS Education Affairs and Professional Affairs Coordinators to advance education and professional development for members.
Fergus earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and his Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. He joined Auburn University in 1992 as an assistant professor, and his research interests include energy conversion and storage, materials for solid oxide fuel cells and lithium ion batteries, as well as chemical sensors and compatibility.
TMS serves to promote the global science and engineering professions concerned with minerals, metals and materials by providing forums for the exchange of information and education among current and future professionals in the industry. The Society encourages professionalism, ethical behavior and environmental concerns to more than 10,000 engineers, scientists, administrators, educators and students.
