Engineering Seminar to Discuss Automated Umpires for Tennis Tournaments

Jeff Smith, industrial and systems engineering faculty member, will provide an overview of his work on scheduling and court-assignment software for tennis tournaments Wednesday, Nov 9 at 10 a.m. in 202 Dunstan Hall.

Since major tennis matches are played over the course of three weeks on up to eighteen different courts simultaneously, scheduling is complex and must adhere to strict organizational regulations. During the one-hour seminar, Smith will discuss his research with the United States Tennis Association and the software he developed that was used to schedule umpires at the 2004 and 2005 U.S. Opens. An updated version of the software is in development and will be used at the 2006 U.S. Open and several other professional tournaments.

Smith received his bachelor's degree in industrial engineering from Auburn University in 1986 and his master's and doctoral degrees from Penn State University in 1990 and 1992.
