ECE Faculty Member Halpin Receives IEEE Award

Mark HalpinMark Halpin, a faculty member in Auburn University's Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, has been selected to receive the 2006 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Charles Proteus Steinmetz Award.

An Alabama Power Company Distinguished Professor since 2003, Halpin is a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. As a senior member of IEEE, Halpin serves in leadership positions in a number of the group's working committees. In 1997, he was named outstanding young member and in 2000 received a millennium medal. He joined IEEE in 1988 as a student member.

The IEEE Charles Proteus Steinmetz Award was established in 1979 in honor of the electrical engineer who invented a commercially successful alternating current motor and the metallic electrode arc lamp. His work is widely recognized for making possible the expansion of the electric power industry in the United States.

The IEEE award, which consists of a bronze medal, certificate and honorarium, is presented annually to an individual for exceptional contributions to developments and advancements in electrical and electronics engineering.
