AU Engineering Students Win Graduate Research Awards

Two Auburn University students, Sherif Abuelenin and Swagat Irsale, won awards at last month's Graduate Student Council's Graduate Student Research Forum. The forum is a multidisciplinary exhibition of student research that allows graduate, professional and undergraduate students to present their research in a public setting.

Graduate students in integrated textile and apparel science, Abuelenin and Irsale created poster exhibits that won them first- and third-place awards respectively.

Abuelenin presented his work on magnetic ring spinning, a new textile manufacturing technology in which a small metal ring driven by magnetic force is used to spin yarn, increasing the speed of yarn spinning and the rate of production.

Irsale reported on the manufacture of several prototypes of textile stents, medical devices used to reinforce the arteries of the heart to combat coronary heart disease. Using these prototypes, he plans to model the flow of blood through the stents.
