Engineering Students Receive National Academy Scholarships

Seven students in Auburn University's Samuel Ginn College of Engineering have been awarded $2,500 National Academy for Nuclear Training scholarships.

"This accomplishment is a testament to the outstanding performance of our students and the strength of our programs," says Larry Benefield, dean of engineering. "It places Auburn Engineering third in the nation in number of academy scholarships awarded, and first in the Southeast among schools without a formal nuclear program."

Selection is based on academic performance, ability to complete a rigorous course of study, and interest in employment in the nuclear power industry.

The recipients include electrical and computer engineering students Carl Kitchens, a freshman from Decatur, Ala., Erin Griffith, a junior from Birmingham, and James Layton, a senior from Carrollton, Ga.; mechanical engineering students Michael Zabala, a freshman from Hoover, Ala. and Johnson Murray, a junior from Homewood, Ala.; and Mellany and Melody George, juniors in textile engineering from Birmingham.

The National Academy for Nuclear Training was established to house the training and educational activities of member companies of the academy and the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO). Scholarship funds are provided by U.S. nuclear electric utilities and INPO supplier participants, with approximately 140 scholarships awarded annually.
