Tony Skjellum, director of the Auburn Cyber Research Center and COLSA cyber security and information assurance professor in the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering, has co-authored a book titled, “Using MPI: Portable Programming with the Message-Passing Interface.” It is the third edition of the publication, which has become a standard in the field of scientific computing.
Skjellum, as well as his co-authors William Gropp, director of the Parallel Computing Institute at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and Ewing Lusk, Argonne distinguished fellow emeritus at Argonne National Laboratory, helped pioneer the concept of message-passing interface (MPI) and its first implementation, MPICH, making it a key parallel processing standard used worldwide.
The team’s book takes an informal, tutorial approach to MPI and parallel programming concepts, introducing each through easy-to-understand examples. MPI is a standardized and portable message-passing system that is able to function on a variety of parallel computers.
