About
Dr. Zhang develops computational fluid dynamics models to assess greenhouse shading control strategies for enhanced cooling efficiency, and applies AI for climate prediction and control to optimize energy management in greenhouses.
Dr. Shelia creates dynamic crop models for lettuce and tomatoes, combining conventional mathematical methods and machine learning to improve yield predictions in greenhouse environments.
Accomplishments
- Designed a localized air distribution solution to improve air movement and climate uniformity in indoor farms.
- Revealed energy consumption differences between greenhouse and indoor farming systems.
- Identified energy-saving strategies for indoor farming, including selecting colder geographic locations, utilizing efficient LED lights, employing HVAC economizers, and choosing cultivars well-suited for indoor cultivation.
