Workshop Description

During this course, best practices for asphalt pavement construction and inspection will be discussed. Topics include work zone safety, surface preparation, mix delivery, segregation, asphalt placement, smoothness, and compaction. This course will be beneficial to contractor and agency personnel response for construction and inspection activities. 

Class size is limited to 40 participants. The cost of the workshop is $175.00. Registrants are reminded that registration is not complete until payment is made. The registration fee includes handout materials, break refreshments, lunch, and a certificate of participation. Participants completing this workshop will receive .60 Continuing Education Units (CEUs), 6.0 Professional Development Hours (PDHs). Instructor: Travis Walbeck

Travis B. Walbeck is a licensed engineer with over 20 years of experience in both private and agency roles. He is currently the Training Manager at the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) at Auburn University. Travis’ experience includes serving at the West Virginia Division of Highways State as Pavement Engineer overseeing the paving and pavement preservation programs, managing pavement specifications, and pavement testing. He served on several regional and national committees related to pavement and, one of which was serving as the President of the Southeast States Pavement Engineers Association. He currently sits on the Transportation Research Board Committee for Pavement Evaluation. 

Instructor: Jeff Benefield

Jeff Benefield is an Auburn graduate and a licensed PE in the State of Alabama. After a brief stint with the Florida DOT, his career with the Alabama DPT spanned 37 years. The majority of that time was spent in construction, either as a Project Manager in the field or various roles within the Construction Bureau. Jeff’s experience includes handling contract administration issues such as claims, specification disputes, and time extensions, along with playing a role in the development of safety training for inspectors in construction work zones. After retirement in 2022, Jeff began working with NCAT as an instructor for the Roadway Technician class. Outside of his work interests, Jeff has traveled extensively with various ministries for water well installations and other projects in countries such as Cuba, El Salvador, Honduras, Haiti, India, Nepal, and the United Arab Emirates.

Cancellation Policy

We understand that circumstances may arise that could require you to cancel your registration, and we make every effort to accommodate your needs. Due to commitments to our instructors and facilities, the registration fee is not refundable if a registrant withdraws less than five working days before the workshop. You may substitute registrants; please notify us in advance if possible. Non-paid, no-show registrants will be invoiced for the full cost of the workshop. ATAP reserves the right to cancel or modify any program offering but will provide registrants with the option of a full refund. Auburn University will not be responsible for expenses incurred by a registrant as the result of a cancelled or rescheduled workshop.
