Student Spotlight - Trent Weaver

Trent Weaver
Senior, Major: Electrical Engineering; Minor: Business
Hometown: Vestavia Hills, Ala.

From calculating equations in his engineering classes to calculating how high to throw his cheerleading partner, Trent Weaver approaches life with a can-do attitude and sense of fun.

Many engineering majors would shy away from engaging in two very rigorous programs such as engineering and cheerleading at the same time, but not Weaver. For the past two years, he's relished every moment of it.

"I have learned to balance my time well, to not procrastinate, and to know what things are the most important in my life," he says.

Weaver wanted to be a cheerleader because he played football and baseball in high school and wanted to continue to be involved in athletics at Auburn. He practices with the squad four times a week; attends at least two campus and community events with the squad each week; and cheers at all Auburn sports, including football, volleyball, soccer, gymnastics and men's women's basketball. In addition, he maintains the squad's Web site, and is active in Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity and with his church.

All of these extracurricular activities have not affected his engineering studies. This high school valedictorian consistently makes the AU Dean's List, has received numerous prestigious university scholarships, and is a member of several honor societies for scholastic achievement, including Cardinal Key, the Cupola Engineering Honor Society, Omnicron Delta Kappa and Delta Epsilon Iota.

As the lone engineering major on the cheerleading squad, Weaver says he has helped to dispel the myth that all engineers are geeky.

"My cheerleading friends now see that most engineers don't spend all of their time studying but that they like to have a good time, too," he says. "They now believe that engineers just think and view things a little differently, and are pretty smart."
