The premise of the agent paradigm, its related theory and methodologies together with advances in multilevel modeling of complex systems of interactions opened new frontiers for advancing the physical, natural, social, military, and information sciences. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and intelligent agents are sources of synergy for simulation and computer-based games. They support striking realism of the physical environment and provide unique opportunities for learning and complex operations.

The purposes of this special issue are as follows:

(1) explore the relationship of AI, in general, and software agents, in particular, to simulation and games and

(2) discuss advancements and applications in AI-inspired simulation game technology. This will include agents with advanced cognitive abilities (introspection, perception, anticipation, and understanding) as well as those representing personality, emotion, and cultural aspects of individuals and societies including issues of ethical behavior.

The special issue will also address  agent-supported game technology to both increase accessibility to simulation and enhance problem solving, analysis, design,  decision making, testing, and  operations as well as training and e-learning.

The special issue aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from diverse simulation gaming societies within computer science, social sciences, engineering, business, education, and entertainment. The involvement of various simulation gaming groups will enable the cross-fertilization of ideas and development of new perspectives by fostering novel advanced solutions, as well as enabling technologies for agent-mediated simulation gaming.

Interested authors are invited to submit (1) A working title, (2) name(s), address, phone, fax, email of authors, and (3) an abstract of the proposed work, for initial review.  Accepted proposals will be asked to submit a full paper for peer review.  The entire review process will be managed electronically.

The papers will be developed and revised during 2006, and publication is projected for 2007.  For more precision on deadlines, consult with the guest editor, whose contact information is given below.

Please send submissions in Adobe-PDF format electronically to:
