IEEE Accomplishments and Activities (SM’93-F’00)
For more than 25 years, Prof. Wilamowski has fostered IEEE activities in the areas of education, conferences, publications and membership. Specific accomplishments include:
· As Treasurer of the Neural Networks Council and Computational Intelligence Society, he instituted procedures that placed these units in excellent financial shape.
· As Treasurer and then President of the Industrial Electronics Society (IES), he increased the financial worth of the Society from about $200k to approximately $6M, resulting in the IES becoming one of the healthiest societies with the lowest membership dues.
· He was the founding Chair of the IEEE Jun-ichi Nishizawa Medal with annual awards of $20k. He has ensured the sustainability of this award in perpetuity, by procuring more than $650k from various industries.
· As the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Trans. on Industrial Electronics, he led the effort to increase the Impact Factor of this journal from a value of below 1.0 to one above 5.0. Now this journal is not only one of the largest journals within the IEEE, but it is also one of the highest ranked.
· He served as Associate Editor for the IEEE Trans. on Education and was a TAB representative to the Educational Activities Board (EAB) in 2008.
· As IES president he was instrumental in creating two new publications: the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics (TII) and the IEEE Industrial Electronics Magazine. He currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the TII.
· He has organized over 10 IEEE conferences, serving as General Chair in each.
· As a recognized researcher/educator, he is frequently invited to be a keynote speaker at numerous international conferences. The most recent keynote speeches include: GCIS'11 Guangzhou, INDII’11 Lisbon, INES’11 Poprad, HSI'11 Tokyo, ICIT'11 Auburn, ISIE'10 Bari, ISRCS'10 Idaho Falls, ICIT'10 Gdansk, AINA’10 Perth, WIS'09 Budapest, POWERENG'09 Lisbon, and INES'09 Barbados.
Statement
Division VI comprises a variety of educational, management, communications, and scientific endeavors. This interdisciplinary character provides a productive synergistic environment as well as a foundation for worldwide leadership in our fields of interest. If elected, I will work with my colleagues to:
· Foster new opportunities to enhance our societies by linking our scientific accomplishments, educational responsibilities, and interdisciplinary interactions for the benefit of our members and our profession.
· Minimize membership dues by reducing IEEE overhead. This is especially important when many of our members are facing economic difficulties. Much of this can be done by improving IEEE financial operations.
· Enhance the portion of our organizations that will benefit from international cooperation. Having spent many years in Europe, Japan, and the USA, I feel well-equipped to enhance the global character of our Division.
It would be an honor and privilege to be part of fulfilling these important objectives, sharing my experiences, and promoting the worldwide operations and collaborations for Division VI.
