Day 12 - Tuesday, September 30th

Tuesday was a very busy day. I checked my body weight on Ellyn's scale first thing in the morning. It was 86.45kg. This was the first time I began to really worry about making weight. I ate a light breakfast. My lunch was light with no bread. Around the middle of the afternoon I cut out the liquids. I knew from the schedule and number of lifters that we would be running behind and we were. As the evening neared we were at least 90 minutes behind. I was getting very tired and had to lift on Wednesday. Chris lifted in the 4th session, but I left to walk back to the hotel about 1/2 way through his session. I found out later that he won his group and barely missed a world record in the clean and jerk. David lifted in the last session so I did not see him lift at all. He placed 3rd in his group. When I left the venue I walked back to the hotel partly to sweat a bit. Ellyn dropped by the room to loan me her scale. Nerves about making weight, lifting, and knowing that I would wake up when David returned served to keep me awake. Just when I was finally dozing off I received a call on my cell from Stella Herrick, who is working doping control. She was at the venue and needed help. When the last session ended everyone left rather quickly and she needed someone wo watch 3 male athletes produce a sample. She asked that I inform Walter and others of the situation and send someone back to the venue. I found Walter, Bill, Jan, and others, but no one seemed willing to help. This was very troubling. We are preached to about the importance of doping control, but the members of the executive board weren't willing to inconvenience their dinner plans to get the job done. Fortunately, Glenn Harris was headed back to the venue with the van to pickup up any stragglers so he got Stella and Marie out of the jam. I went back to the room, weighed myself one last time, and went to sleep in my warmup suit to lose a little extra sweat during the night.
