Theory and practice of human computer interaction; designing, implementing and evaluating human computer interation. The objectives of this course are: (i) to introduce students to the interdisciplinary theoretical foundations of the field of Human-Computer Interaction; (ii) to illustrate practical approaches to translating the theory into building and evaluating interactive systems; (iii) to expose students to the tasks of researching, critically analyzing and reporting on an HCI topic; and (iv) to provide hands-on experience in designing or modifying and experimentally evaluating an interactive system.

Important Notes:
Read the text & reference.
The course will cover many chapters of the text and reference in lectures and reading assignments, at different levels of depth. With this graduate level course, you are expected NOT to depend solely on lectures, which will only touch upon selected points. Specific reading assignments from the text and reference will be given out in class. In addition, research papers will be handed out in class from time to time.
Attend classes and participate in class discussions.
The instructor will introduce issues as starting points for in-class discussion in which everyone is expected to participate. This, of course, requires that you read the materials BEFORE they are discussed in class! Powerpoint files of class lectures will be available on a course web site. Class attendance and participation will be the sole determinant of whether you get the higher grade if you fall on the borderline (for outreach students a different criterion will be used: whether you have handed in all projects, taken all exams, and met all other work requirements).
Grading
Assignments will consist of readings, programming and/or written exercises.
All work is to be done independently (unless explicitly stated by instructor).
Late homework solutions will not be accepted. I reserve the right to keep all
homework assignments.
In Class Exams 30% [2 exams] Feb 18 and April 22
Literature critiquing 10%
Lit. Survey & Presentation 20%
System Design & Evaluation 40%
The final grade will be based on assignments (written and programming),
attendance/participation, and exams. If you miss an exam or fail to turn in an
assignment on time (without an official University excuse), you will receive a
zero.
No late assignments will be accepted!!
Exams
Exam dates are tentative and may be changed at instructor discretion.
I reserve the right to keep all exams. You will be informed
as to the format of an exam as well as the format of the questions on an
exam.
Academic Integrity
Each examination and individual assignment is expected to be solely the work of the one student submitting it. The instructor will follow the university’s policy on academic integrity in this matter.
Cheating
Instances of cheating will be handled according to
university policy. Cheating covers any case in which a student has received
unauthorized aid in his/her performance that contributes to a course grade or
submits material contributing to a course grade with the intent to deceive the
instructor or grader. If the unauthorized aid includes help from another
student, then that student is considered to have cheated as well.
