Students, college have impressive showing at AIChE Conference

Auburn's Department of Chemical Engineering came back with two top awards from this year's Southeast Regional American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Conference. Auburn was one of 22 schools present at the competition held March 10-12.

Seniors Parker Sizemore and Rose Marie Cummings took first place in the student paper competition and the student poster competition, respectively, sweeping both technical competitions. Sizemore, a senior from Cumming, Ga., took home top honors for his research, "Biomimetic Recognitive Hydrogels for the Treatment of Allergic Rhinoconjuctivitis." Cummings, a senior from Deatsville, Ala., received first place in the poster competition with a project, "Comparing Minimum Utility Requirements of Various Reforming Techniques and Multiple Fuel Sources for Hydrogen Production."

"I was extremely impressed by the Auburn students," said Chris Roberts, Uthlaut professor and head of the chemical engineering department. "They performed well in every category, from the technical competitions to the spirit competition."

The Auburn Chemical Car team achieved third place with an entry powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. This marked the first time Auburn entered the competition, which featured 15 teams.

The icing on the cake came as students from the College of Engineering put in a successful bid to bring the 2008 regional conference to Auburn's campus. Hosting the conference at Auburn gives the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering a chance to share with the academic community the outstanding programs and facilities the college has to offer.

"We're looking forward to showing off our new Ross Hall and Wilmore Labs complex," Roberts said. "Our performance in this competition gives a clear indication of the quality of education and research programs Auburn University has to offer."
