We would like to congratulate Sachin Jambovane for publication of his paper in the highly influential journal 'Analytical Chemistry', published since 1929 by the American Chemical Society (ACS). The title of the paper is Determination of Kinetic Parameters, Km and kcat, with a Single Experiment on a Chip. It discusses the development of microfluidics platform which powerfully automates the complete process of analysis of biological enzyme catalysis reactions. It is also able to revolutionize the conventional manual experimental setup for enzyme analysis which otherwise is a very lengthy, laborious and expensive process. The platform has applications in laboratory-based biological and medical testing and the evaluation and development of new drugs, enzymes, substrates and inhibitors especially with very limited amount of samples.

Congratulations!!! Dr. Woon Seob Lee is going to give an ORAL presentation at one of the largest material conferences in the world, Materials Research Society (MRS) 2009 Spring Meeting, on April 15 in San Francisco, CA. Dr. Lee’s presentation is entitled Nanoparticle Synthesis on a Programmable Microfluidic Droplet System. He is going to discuss really cool stuff of the synthesis of CdS semiconductor nanoparticles in a programmable picoliter droplet microreactor. Dr. Lee’s topic has a great potential to open a new window for nanomaterial research.

Congratulation!!! Hoon Suk Rho will give an ORAL presentation with the title of Microfluidic Landscaper: Analysis of Intricate Catalytic Performances of an Enzyme at the Material Research Society (MRS) 2009 Spring Meeting in San Francisco on the 17th of April. He will describe his remarkable accomplishment in developing unique microfluidic system, which can provide landscaped reaction parameters with a single experiment on a chip. This has great potential to revolutionize biotechnology and nanotechnology. Again, we congratulate Hoon Suk Rho and expect his continuous efforts and successes.

JW Hong was invited to the first National Science Foundation (NSF) funded U.S.-India Nanoscience and Engineering Institute (USINSEI), which was held in Chennai (Madras), India, from January 8 to 18, 2008. He gave a lecture on “Nanofluidic Systems for Materials Processing and Biomedical Applications” during the institute. Hong, along with other U.S. delegates, also visited the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Chennai, the University of Madras, and the Indira Gandhi Center for Atomic Research (IGCAR) to exchange mutual interests in nanoscience and nanoscale engineering for scientific research and industrial applications.

The institute was an excellent opportunity for the participants to obtain a global perspective on nanoscience and engineering research and education, and to establish networks and collaborative interactions with U.S.-based and Indian scientists. The Institute was a result of the U.S.-India science and technology cooperation agreement signed by U.S. Secretary of State Condaleezza Rice and Kapil Sibal, the Indian minister for science and technology, a couple of years ago.
