Current Homework 1 due (Why humans should go to space paper)

What's happening in space?

EVA Troubleshooting: Flight Engineer, Mike Fincke replaced the Pump Inlet
Filter on EMU3013. The pump inlet filter is the filter between the EMU
feedwater circuit and the EMU cooling loop water circuit. The old filter was
removed with minimal effort and placed in the protective sleeve that the new
filter was launched in on 15 Progress. This old filter was stowed for next
possible return. The new filter was successfully installed. EMU3013 is
currently in a nominal configuration.

EVA #11 Preparation: The crew completed an EVA #11 timeline study and tool
preparation on August 25, 2004. EVA #11 includes the replacement of the FGB
flow control valve panel, FGB fairleads installation, WAL 1,2, and 3
Installation on SM, and DC1 Handrail Limiters Installation. During the EVA
crew will take imagery of the Payloads, MPAC & SEED panel #3. The MPAC &
SEED is a study of meteoroid and man-made environment and of the effects of
outer space factor on exposed materials. The crew also prepared items in the
US Segment to be transferred to Russian Segment for the EVA.

Space Station Remote Manipulator System Camera Characterization: Ground
controllers in Houston performed characterization of the Mobile Servicing
System (MSS) cameras and camera eye point model validation. The
Focus/Iris/Zoom (F/I/Z) Test was performed and verified for the following
MSS cameras : Tip Elbow, Tip Latching End Effector (LEE), Base Elbow, and
Mobile Base System Mast Camera. The Base LEE A and MBS POA cameras were not
a part of the test. Ground controllers completed data collection for Remote
Planning System camera eye-point models used to generate camera positions
and pictures for robotics procedures. The cameras were left parked in
position to view EVA 11. The SSRMS was powered-up on both strings to check
joint angles. During the power-up, ground controllers noticed a 0.1 degrees
difference in joint angles from the last time the SSRMS was operational on
August 3, 2004. Ground teams are investigating this angle discrepancy. This
will have no impact on EVA 11.

SM Internal Thermal Loop Pump Panel R&R: Commander, Gennady Pedalka removed
and replaced the Internal Thermal Loop Pump Panel on August 24, 2004.
This pump panel originally failed on July 14, 2004. The dismantled pump was
prepared for disposal.
