Course Description

Space Mission Design is a two semester sequence class which includes the history of human spacecraft and the technical considerations for their design and use.  The technical development of human spacecraft from Vostok to the International Space Station will be reviewed.  Spacecraft design requirements based on the space environment and human physiology will be discussed and a design process will be with taught using systems providing life support.  The course will center around a student design of a spacecraft for a human interplanetary exploratory mission and will include technical design and program management.  Some collaboration will be done with student teams from other universities.   Requirements will include student spacecraft system design projects with presentation of proposals, design reviews and completed design projects.

The class is taught by former astronaut Jim Voss and will include guest lecturers from the aerospace industry and NASA.
