At Antietam, George Gordon Meade, commanded the 3d Division, I Army Corps. After Joseph Hooker, the corps commander, was wounded in the foot in The Cornfield, Meade was put in command of I Corps. Meade, sometimes referred to as a "goggle-eyed snapping turtle" because of his bulging eyes and quick temper, became the fifth, and last, Commander of the Army of the Potomac on 28 June 1863, succeeding Hooker just three days prior to the Battle of Gettysburg.
