John Bell Hood of Kentucky¶, sometimes called "Old Wooden Head" by his troops, commanded a division under James Longstreet on 17 September 1862. Camped just southwest of the Dunker Church, Hood's Texans reinforced Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson's men and helped push back the Union I Corps under Joseph "Fighting Joe" Hooker. ¶ Because his native state had declared itself "neutral" when Hood enlisted in the Confederate Army, he was given an appointment from the Texas allotment. |
