GRADUATE STUDENT AWARDS

Graduate students who have worked with Dr. Byrne on extended research projects have demonstrated excellence in their creative research work and have been recognized by the academic and professional community in a number of ways.

17. 2011 AU Graduate Research Symposium Finalist - Charles White (March 11, 2011) With a research presentation performance in the top division scores, Charlie moved to the next level of the competition, the Graduate Scholars Symposium held April 2, 2011 at the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art.

14. 2009 Samuel Ginn College of Engineering Graduation Marshall - RyAnne Noss (May 9, 2009) One student with exemplary scholarship is chosen by the Graduate School as graduation marshall to represent each College during each University graduation ceremony.

13. 2007 Harry Merriwether Fellowship - Siddarth Venkatesh (August 22, 2007) Auburn university-wide competition for exceptional graduate students with only 4 being awarded each year.

Second Place in Engineering Category for Podium Presentation at the 17th Annual Auburn University Graduate Student Council Research Forum - Asa Vaughan (March 17, 2007) The Graduate Research Forum is a campus-wide, multi-disciplinary forum sponsored by the Auburn Graduate Student Council and Sigma Xi.

8. Fall 2005 McLeod Outstanding Chemical Engineering Graduate Student Teaching Award - Siddarth Venkatesh (April 25, 2006) The award is given to the best graduate teaching assistant each semester and is based on excellence in instruction, teaching effectiveness, impact on undergraduate students intellectual and professional development, as well as other criteria.

2. 2006-2007 Army Ranger Memorial Foundation Scholarship- RyAnne Noss (January 2006) Fifteen competitive scholarships are given each year. Ranger Memorial Foundation Scholarships are not need-based and are awarded on the academic strengths of each applicant.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT AWARDS

Undergraduates who have worked with Dr. Byrne on extended research projects have demonstrated excellence in their creative research work and have been recognized by the academic and professional community in a number of ways. They have published the results of their work in numerous peer-reviewed publications, presented their work across the country at a number of national and regional venues, and they have won major competitive awards.Undergraduates have won 30 total awards for research: 11 national, 10 regional and 9 campus awards. These have included prestigious national scholarships and awards that are some of the top prizes and highest distinctions in research activities.

30. 2011-2012 Auburn University Competitive Undergraduate Research Fellowship - Matthew McBride (April 20, 2011) Only 20 full-year fellowships are awarded each year on the AU campus. The fellowship consists of a stipend of $4,400 over the course of the fellowship year and project funds of $1,400.

2011 Auburn University President's Award - David Harris (April 13, 2011) The President's Award recognizes one graduate in each school or college who has completed at least three semesters at Auburn with a minimum grade point average of 3.40, and possesses outstanding qualities of leadership, citizenship, character and promise of professional ability.

29. 2011 First Place-Outstanding Research Presentation Award, Competitive Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program, 8th Annual Auburn University Campus-wide Undergraduate Research & Scholarship Forum - David Harris (April 13, 2011)

28. Overall Conference Third Place in Regional Podium Competition at 2011 AIChE Regional Meeting, Atlanta, GA - Kayla Pate (April 2, 2011) Kayla took third place honors for the entire conference. She is the third student in our department's history to earn one of the top three research prizes in the overall regional conference.

25. 2011 Gates Cambridge Scholarship Winner - David Harris (February 6, 2011) Gates Cambridge Scholarships are highly competitive full-cost awards for full-time graduate study and research in any subject available at the University of Cambridge (Only 30 scholarships are awarded each year). Only 90 students from across the US were selected as finalists from more than seven hundred applicants. David interviewed in New York in 2011 for the final selection process.

23. Overall Second Place in National Poster Competition at 2010 AIChE Meeting, Salt Lake City, IA - Kayla Pate (November 8, 2010) Kayla took second place national honors describing her research out of hundreds of poster presenters.

22. First Place Prize in the Food, Pharmaceutical, and Biotechnology Undergraduate National Student Poster Competition at the 2010 AIChE Meeting, Salt Lake City, IA - Kayla Pate (November 8, 2010) Kaya won section first place for her poster presentation.

21. 2010 Jerry Nelson Scholarship, Phi Kappa Psi National Fraternity Foundation - Daniel Pulliam (June 14, 2010) Awarded to one brother nationwide for outstanding scholarship and character.

20. 2010 Phi Kappa Phi Susan Stacey Entrenkin Yates Scholastic Award - David Harris (April 26, 2010) Presented each year to 1-3 outstanding juniors at AU who demonstrate excellence in scholarship, activities, and character. David was the 2nd engineering student to win this award.

19. 2010-2011 Auburn University Competitive Undergraduate Research Fellowship - David Harris (April 12, 2010) Only 20 full-year fellowships are awarded each year on the AU campus. The fellowship consists of a stipend of $4,400 over the course of the fellowship year and project funds of $1,400.

18. Overall Fourth Place in Regional Poster Competition at 2010 AIChE Southern Regional Conference, Raleigh, NC - David Harris (April 10, 2010) David was awarded fourth place of all the poster presenters at the conference.

17. 2010 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship - David Harris (April 10, 2010) Awarded to ~300 students nationwide, and it is widely considered the most prestigious award in the US for undergraduates in STEM disciplines.

16. First Place in National Paper Competition at 2008 AIChE Annual Meeting, Philadelphia, PA - Jeney Zhang (November 16, 2008) Jeney presented her research work and competed against 8 other finalist from across the country and won first place for her research. This is the second national first place undergraduate winner from the Byrne group since 2006.

15. Overall First Place in Regional Paper Competition at 2008 AIChE Southern Regional Conference, Auburn, AL - Jeney Zhang (April 5, 2008) At the regional meeting, all first place podium presenters within each section were eligible for this award. Jeney took home top honors for her research of all podium participants at the meeting. As a result, she secured her spot to participate in the National competition at the Fall 2008 AIChE meeting in Philadelphia, PA

14. Section First Place in Regional Paper Competition at 2008 AIChE Southern Regional Conference, Auburn, AL - Jeney Zhang (April 5, 2008) Jeney was awarded first place for her research of all podium participants in her section.

13. Second Place in National Poster Competition at 2007 AIChE Annual Meeting, Salt Lake City, UT - Jeney Zhang (November 5, 2007)

12. 2007 Phi Kappa Phi Susan Stacey Entrenkin Yates Scholastic Award - Efe Sahinoglu (April 26, 2007) ) Presented each year to 1-3 outstanding juniors at AU who demonstrate excellence in scholarship, activities, and character. Efe was the first engineering student to win this award.

9. Second Place in Regional Poster Competition at 2007 AIChE Southern Regional Conference, Columbia, SC - Shondra Pass, Jishnu Saha (March 31, 2007)

8. Section Third Place in Regional Paper Competition at 2007 AIChE Southern Regional Conference, Columbia, SC - Jeney Zhang (March 31, 2007)

7. First Place in National Paper Competition at 2006 AIChE Annual Meeting, San Francisco, CA - Parker Sizemore (November 13, 2006) Parker represented the Southern Region against 8 other first place competitors who won their respective regional competitions in the Spring. Parker presented his research work and competed against the 8 other finalist from across the United States and won first place for his research. Parker wasthe first Auburn Chemical Engineering student to win this award.

The fellowship consists of a stipend of $4,400 over the course of the fellowship year, project funds of $1,400, and $200 in travel funds.

5. 2006 Omega Chi Epsilon Award - Parker Sizemore (March 16, 2006) The Omega Chi Epsilon Award has been awarded to chemical engineering students by individual chapters since 1974. In a desire to recognize outstanding individuals in the field of chemical engineering, the Auburn chapter gives out this award to a chemical engineering student nominated by faculty or staff of the Auburn Chemical Engineering Department. The criteria are three-fold: (i) the student promotes investigation and innovation in chemical engineering, (ii) the student provides service to the chemical engineering department, and (iii) the student encourages comradeship among chemical engineers.

4. Overall First Place in Regional Paper Competition at 2006 AIChE Southern Regional Conference, Mississippi State, MS - Parker Sizemore (March 11, 2006) At the regional meeting, all first place podium presenters within each section were eligible for this award. Parker took home top honors of all podium participants at the meeting. As a result, he secured his spot to participate in the National competition at the Fall 2006 AIChE meeting in San Francisco, CA.

3. Section First Place in Regional Paper Competition at 2006 AIChE Southern Regional Conference, Mississippi State, MS - Parker Sizemore (March 11, 2006) Parker was awarded the First Place Prize for his podium presentation in Section B for his research entitled "Biomimetic Recognitive Hydrogels for the Treatment of Allergic Rhinoconjunctivitis."

2. First Place Prize in the Food, Pharmaceutical, and Biotechnology Undergraduate National Student Poster Competition at the 2005 AIChE Meeting, Cincinnati, OH - Parker Sizemore (November 2, 2005) Parker was awarded First Place for his research entitled "Polymerization Reaction Analysis to Enhance Loading of Hydrogels for Ocular Drug Delivery"

1. 2005 Biomedical Engineering Society Undergraduate Student Award Winner for Outstanding Biomedical Engineering Research, Baltimore, MD - Parker Sizemore (October 2005) Only five national awards are presented each year with the designation of one of the top prizes for undergraduate research in Biomedical Engineering. Parker submitted a research paper and presented his research at the national meeting.
