Jong Wook (J.W.) Hong received his Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo in Chemical Engineering, his M.S. and B.S. are from Pukyong National University, Korea. He was a postdoctoral scholar at Thomas J. Watson Laboratories of Applied Physics, the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). He teaches and studies nanobiotechnology and nano/microfluidic systems for materials processing and biology/medicine applications. His research has focused on integrated nano/microsystesms for biotechnology, and more specifically single cell/molecule analysis, integrated micro system for multiple enzymatic reactions, and very-large-scale integrated (VLSI) microfluid systems for automated bioprocessing.

One of his research papers, A Nanoliter-Scale Nucleic Acid Processor with Parallel Architecture (Nature Biotechnology 2004 22(4): 435-9), described the first parallel processing of complicated nanoliter/picoliter fluidic samples. He is currently affiliated with the Auburn University Detection and Food Safety (AUDFS) Center and the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) Center for Airline Cabin Environment Reseach (ACER). He has received Research Awards from the Japanese Scoety of Chemical Engineers, Tokyo Branch, and Young Asian Biochemical Engineers Community (YABEC). Hong has also been a Japanese government scholar and was a junior research associate at the University of Tokyo and the Institute for Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN), Japan.

Other scholary interests include phase transformation of materials and polymer processing about which he teaches and is making plans for future research. He currently serves as a reviewer for several scientific journals including NanoLetters, Journal of American Chemical Society (JACS) and Journal of MEMS.
