CHEN 4100 Pulp and Paper Processing Laboratory

Time:               Wed 2.00 p.m.   2:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Location:          Lec. AE 254   Lab.L-Building 206

Objectives:

  1. To study the fundamental unit operations involved in the manufacture of pulp and paper.

  2. To become familiar with the use of the pulp and paper laboratory testing procedures and Tappi standards.

  3. To learn to write technical reports and express results and conclusions in a clear and concise manner.

 Sources of Materials:

  1. Copies of notes provided at cost.

  2. Copies of Tappi standards provided at cost.

  3. Reference books listed in course outline.

Course Plan:

The course will consist of the following experiments, one pulp and paper mill visit and lectures on the laboratory experiments and the related theories.

1.         Fiber analysis

2.         Consistency and freeness

3.         Kraft pulping

4.         Bleaching

5.         Laboratory processing of pulp

6.                  Filler retention

7.                  Pulp and Paper testing

Attendance Policy:

Laboratory attendance is mandatory.  One letter grade (in the course) will be subtracted for each unexcused absence from the laboratory. Tardiness and horseplay are not permitted and will lead to lowering of a student's grade in the course.

Reports:

Reports are to be submitted for all the experiments one week following the completion of the experiment.  In addition, a mill report is due a week after the visit.

Grading:

Grade will be determined on the following basis.

a.         Laboratory work and report               60%  

b.         Quizzes                                            10%

c.         Final examination                              30%
