Norman Sammons
awarded 2008-2009 Harry Merriwether Fellowship
Norm was selected by a special committee of the Graduate Council as
one of Auburn's four Harry Merriwether Fellowship recipients for
2008-2009. The fellowship was given to the University by an
anonymous donor in honor of Harry Merriwether, an outstanding
graduate of this University in the Class of 1943. The fellowship is
awarded for one academic year and will pay a total stipend of
$2000.00 during Fall Semester. The recipient is required to devote
full-time to graduate study during the tenure of this appointment.
Norm will be honored at the Graduate Student Council Spring Picnic
on April 2 at the Arboretum at 12 Noon. (Pic

Norman Sammons
selected as 2007-2008 Auburn University Distinguished Outstanding
Doctoral Student Norm was
selected by a special committee of the Graduate Council as one of
Auburn’s distinguished ten doctoral outstanding students for
2007-2008. The announcement from the Graduate School Deans said:
"Your selection brings credit to the quality of the record you have
established at Auburn University and reflects in an exceptionally
positive fashion on your advisor and department. We are all proud of
your accomplishments." Norm will be honored at the Graduate Student
Council Spring Picnic on April 2 at the Arboretum at 12 Noon and
will be featured at that time in a story in the AU Report.

Dr. Eden invited
to participate in NSF Roadmap Development Workshop
Participation is by invitation only, with a select group of 15
industrial leaders and 15 academic leaders in the modeling, systems,
and manufacturing areas. The workshop will focus on critical
research needs for achieving smart manufacturing with zero incidents
and zero emissions.

Jeffrey Seay
successfully defended his Ph.D. Thesis On Monday March 10,
2008 Jeff became the second doctoral student
to be awarded his Ph.D. degree under Dr. Eden's supervision. Jeff's
thesis and presentation "A Methodology for Integrating Process
Design Elements with Laboratory Experiments" was very well
received by his committee, which consisted of Dr. Chris Roberts, Dr.
Jin Wang, Dr. Tom Thomas and Mr. Robert D'Alessandro.

Dr. Eden awarded
tenure and promotion to Associate Professor On February 28,
2008 Auburn University President Jay Gogue approved the
recommendation of the Committee on Tenure and Promotion that Dr.
Eden be granted tenure and promoted to the rank of Associate
Professor effective Fall semester 2008.

New graduate
student joins Dr. Eden's group
A new PhD student joined Dr. Eden's group in October 2007. Susilpa
Bommareddy received her B.Tech from University College of
Technology, Osmania University in 2007. Susilpa will be working on
optimization of fuel production processes from coal and biomass.

Rose graduated from Alabama School of Math and Science (ASMS) before

Jeff Seay
successfully defended his preliminary thesis
On August 10, 2007 Jeff had his General Oral Examination, which
he passed with flying colors. His presentation "A Methodology
for Integration Process Design Elements with Laboratory Experiments" was very well
received by his committee, which consisted of Dr. Chris Roberts, Dr.
Jin Wang, Dr. Thomas Thomas (from University of South Alabama) and Mr.
Robert D'Alessandro (from Degussa).

Andrew Odjo
Omoniyi from Spain visiting Dr. Eden's group
Andrew is a Ph.D. student at the Research Institute of Chemical
Engineering Processes at the University of Alicante, Spain. He
received his MS from Volgograd State Technology University in Russia
in 1997, and then worked for a number of years before returning to
school. He is a Doctoral Research Fellow of the Spanish Ministry of
Science and Technology. Andrew specializes in mathematical
programming methods for optimization of chemical processes and
the study of polymer recycling as an alternative fuel source.

Charles Solvason
awarded the 2006 McLeod Outstanding Chemical Engineering Graduate
Student Teaching Award
The McLeod Outstanding Chemical Engineering Graduate Student
Teaching Award is given to the best graduate teaching assistants
each calendar year comprising the Summer, Fall, and Spring academic
terms and is based on excellence in instruction, teaching
effectiveness, impact on undergraduate students' intellectual and
professional development, as well as other criteria. Charlie was
nominated for this honor by the department for his outstanding work
with helping out with the unit operations laboratory last year.
Charlie prepared and gave lectures on Design of Experiments, and the
student responses to his efforts were outstanding.

Chemical Product and Process Modeling is the premier forum for
publishing technological advances and research results in the fields
of product and process modeling and simulation from around the

Jennifer Wilder
and Fadwa Eljack graduate May 10, 2007
Jennifer and Fadwa will both be graduating this Spring. Jennifer
will be starting her job with Eastman Chemical Company in Kingsport,
TN soon and Fadwa will be joining the Chemical Engineering faculty
at Qatar University this summer. Fadwa and Dr. Eden will attend the
graduation ceremony. Fadwa will be the first Ph.D. to be hooded by
Dr. Eden. Congratulations to both Jennifer and Fadwa!

Jennifer Wilder
honored at the 2007 Honors College Symposium
Jennifer will be graduating this semester as a University Honors
Scholar, which is the highest honor the Auburn University Honors
College awards. It requires a student to complete both the Junior
and Senior honors programs, complete a research thesis and maintain
at least a 3.4 GPA. Jennifer has worked very hard throughout her
time in Auburn and this honor is very well-deserved. (Dr.

Jennifer's presentation entitled "Integration Potentials in Various
Reformer Strategies for Logistical Fuels Processing" was very well
received by the judges.

Jennifer Wilder
wins Second Place at AIChE Southern Regional Student Conference in
Columbia, SC Jennifer's
presentation entitled "A Study of Integration Potentials in Various
Reformer Strategies for Logistical Fuels Processing" was very well
received by the judges. Jennifer also presented an excellent poster
on her research during the conference, but due to the conference
rules could only be judged on one of them. Jennifer's recognition is
accompanied by a cash award of $400.

Dr. Eden
wins the William F. Walker Superior Teaching Award The
Superior Walker Award is the highest teaching award in the Samuel
Ginn College of Engineering and recognizes excellence in teaching.
Auburn alumnus Fred Birdsong and his wife Mary Lou endowed the
teaching awards to recognize and motivate outstanding teaching
achievement by faculty involved in the instruction of engineering
students. It was renamed in 2000 in honor of former Auburn
University President and Dean William F. Walker and provides a

Kristin
McGlocklin successfully defended her M.Sc. thesis
On Friday November 3, 2006 Kristin became the first graduate student
to be awarded her degree under Dr. Eden's supervision. Kristin's
thesis and presentation "Economic Analysis of Various Reforming
Techniques and Fuel Sources for Hydrogen Production" was very well
received by her committee, which consisted of Dr. Chris Roberts,
Dr. Bob Ashurst, and Dr. Christine Curtis. Kristin will be working

New graduate
students join Dr. Eden's group
Two new students joined Dr. Eden's group in October 2006. Wei Yuan
received her BSc from Tsinghua University, China in 2006. Wei will
be working on integration and optimization of polygeneration
facilities. Nishanth Chemmangattuvalappil received his BSc from the
Government Engineering College Thrissur, India in 2001. Nishanth
will be working on property based design, with particular emphasis
on molecular synthesis.

Lecture at 2006 AIChE Annual Meeting
The Computing and Systems
Technology (CAST) Division of AIChE invites selected papers from
each CAST area to be presented in the CAST plenary session. Dr. Eden
will give the presentation entitled "Process and Molecular Design: A
Simultaneous Approach". The co-authors are Fadwa Eljack, Charles
Solvason and from Texas A&M University: Vasiliki Kazantzi and

featured in CAST Newsletter
For her novel work on bridging the gap between property based
process design and molecular synthesis, Fadwa was awarded the
Directors' Award for Best
Poster by the judges in the CAST division at the 2005 AIChE Annual
Meeting. The award, which
consist of a cash prize of $500 and a plaque, will be presented to Fadwa
at the 2006 CAST Awards Banquet November 14 during the 2006 AIChE
Annual Meeting.

awarded US-EPA STAR Fellowship The Science To Achieve Results (STAR) fellowship program was
initiated in 1995. The purpose of the fellowship program is to
encourage promising students to obtain advanced degrees and pursue
careers in an environmental field. The STAR fellowship program has
proven to be beneficial to both the public and private sectors by
providing a steady stream of well-trained environmental specialists
to meet environmental challenges in our society. The EPA awards only
100 of these fellowships each year to science and engineering
students making this a highly competitive and prestigious award.
Norm's award consist of a total of $111,000 over 3 years covering
his stipend, tuition and fees and project funds. (More

Dr. Eden's Group PSE-2006/ESCAPE-16 July 9-13 a joint conference of PSE' 2006 and ESCAPE-16 was held in
Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Dr. Eden's group was represented by Fadwa, Norm, Jeff and Dr. Eden. The group gave a

Hawaii The summit was intended to provide a unique forum for

New Graduate
Student joins Dr. Eden's Group Charlie Solvason joined Dr. Eden's group in October 2005. Charlie
received his BSc (Summa Cum Laude) in Chemical Engineering from
Auburn University in 2001. After working for Kimberley-Clark for a
number of years, he has returned to Auburn for his doctorate.
Charlie will be working on property based design with particular
emphasis on product design. |

Alabama
Agricultural Experiment Station (AAES) to fund new project Dr. Eden developed a proposal for the Poultry Litter initiative in
collaboration with Dr. Harry Cullinan (AU), Dr. Chris Roberts (AU)
and Dan Burciaga (TRI). The project has been awarded $120,000 for
the first year. The project involves the evaluation of technical,
economical and environmental feasibility of gasification of poultry
litter followed by Fischer-Tropsch synthesis for fuels production. |

2005 Auburn University Competitive Research Grant The purpose of the Auburn University Competitive Research Grant
Program was created to encourage and broaden faculty participation

students and the University’s overall mission. The program

Jeffrey Seay from Degussa Corporation joins Dr. Eden's group
It is a pleasure to welcome Jeff to our group. Jeff is
working for Degussa Corporation in Mobile, AL. He has a B.Sc. from
Auburn University and a M.Sc. from University of South Alabama.
Jeff's research project will involve the design and analysis of an
alternative production scheme for Acrolein from glycerin. The
project is funded completely by Degussa Corporation. Jeff will start
his research this summer. |

Professor Sten Bay Jørgensen visited Auburn
Dr. Eden's former advisor from the Department of Chemical
Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark came to visit
Thursday April 14, 2005. Professor Jørgensen met with faculty and
graduate students in the department and also gave a departmental
seminar entitled: Computer Aided Process Engineering Center.

Rose Marie Cummings awarded
Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship The Scholarship Program honoring Senator Barry M. Goldwater was
designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue
careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences, and
engineering. The Goldwater Scholarship is the premier undergraduate
award of its type in these fields. Rose was the sole Auburn student
to be awarded this scholarship and only one out of four from the
