STUDENT AWARDS
Graduate
students who have worked with Dr. Byrne
on extended research projects have demonstrated
excellence in their creative research work
and have been recognized by the academic
and professional community in a number of
ways.
26. 2012 British
Contact Lens Association (BCLA) Da Vinci
Award- Charles White (May
24, 2012) The Da Vinci Award is an international
research award that is given annually to
the author of a practical contribution to
the field of contact lenses and/or anterior
eye. Charles becomes the first American
researcher to win the award with other recent
winners from Britain, France, Germany, Canada,
and Australia. The BCLA is a large international
organization promoting excellence in research,
manufacture, and clinical practice of contact
lenses and ophthalmology as well as related
areas. The BCLA was founded over thirty-five
years ago. In May, Charlie will go to Birmingham,
UK to attend the 36th Annual BCLA Clinical
Conference to give an invited presentation
on his research work and attend a gala dinner
to receive the award. This award is in recognition
of Charlie’s groundbreaking work in
the field engineering lens structure and
controlling the release of comfort agents
from continuous wear contact lenses to ensure
high levels of patient comfort and ocular
health, published in the international journal
and leading journal in the field, Biomaterials.
The award includes an £1,000 honorarium
and lodging and conference fees.

University - Padma Sundaram (April
14, 2012) Padma’s
research was judged in a refereed competition
and was awarded 3rd place in the PhD (doctoral)
category. There were approximately 50+ PhD
level entries from many Universities in
the region, and her award was a plaque and
$800. Her presentation was entitled “A
novel, versatile drug delivery nano-carrier
for controlled and extended release of therapeutics".

honors outstanding graduate students at
Auburn University. Charles was a winner
this year with each department nominating
one student to be considered for the award.

Undergraduates
who have worked with Dr. Byrne on extended
research projects have demonstrated excellence
in their creative research work and have
been recognized by the academic and professional
community in a number of ways.
They have published the results of their
work in numerous peer-reviewed publications,
presented their work across the country
at a number of national and regional venues,
and they have won major competitive awards.Undergraduates
have won a total of 41 awards for
research: 13 national, 13
regional and 15 campus awards. These
have included prestigious national scholarships
and awards that are some of the top prizes
and highest distinctions in research activities.

Cambridge Scholarships are highly competitive
full-cost awards for full-time graduate
study and research in any subject available
at the University of Cambridge (Only 30
scholarships are awarded each year).
Only 90 students from across the US were
selected as finalists from more than seven
hundred applicants. David interviewed in
New York in 2011 for the final selection
process.

her research. This is the second national
first place undergraduate winner from the
Byrne group since 2006 and the second in
the history of our chemical engineering
department..

AL - Jeney Zhang (April
5, 2008) At the regional meeting, all first
place podium presenters within each section
were eligible for this award. Jeney took
home top honors for her research of all
podium participants at the meeting. As a
result, she secured her spot to participate
in the National competition at the Fall
2008 AIChE meeting in Philadelphia, PA.
She is the second student in the history
of our department to win overall first place
at the southern regional meeting.

in the Spring. Parker presented his research
work and competed against the 8 other finalist
from across the United States and won first
place for his research. Parker is the first
Auburn Chemical Engineering student to win
this award.

(August 4, 2006) At the conclusion
of the program each year, NSF REU fellows
are judged by external reviewers on their
research work and presentation. Shondra
was awarded first place for her REU project
entitled "Therapeutic Contact Lenses
for Anti-histamines: Transport of Ketotifen
Fumarate Through Biomimetic Hydrogels".

available each year. The fellowship consists
of a stipend of $4,400 over the course of

2006 Omega Chi Epsilon Award - Parker Sizemore
(March 16, 2006) The Omega
Chi Epsilon Award has been awarded to chemical
engineering students by individual chapters
since 1974. In a desire to recognize outstanding
individuals in the field of chemical engineering,
the Auburn chapter gives out this award
to a chemical engineering student nominated
by faculty or staff of the Auburn Chemical
Engineering Department. The criteria are
three-fold: (i) the student promotes investigation
and innovation in chemical engineering,
(ii) the student provides service to the
chemical engineering department, and (iii)
the student encourages comradeship among
chemical engineers.

meeting, all first place podium presenters

2006 AIChE meeting in San Francisco, CA.
Parker is the first student in the history
of our department to win overall first place
at the regional meeting.

Student Award Winner for Outstanding Biomedical
Engineering Research, Baltimore,
MD - Parker Sizemore (October
2005) Only five national awards are presented
each year with the designation of one of
the top prizes for undergraduate research
in Biomedical Engineering. Parker submitted
a research paper and presented his research
at the national meeting.
