SMA Mix Design and Construction

Hose with water passing through porous pavement

Course Overview

This 2.5 day training course is for those involved with the design, production, and placement of Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA). Many engineers choose to place SMA mixes on their highest traffic volume projects where a durable, rut-resistant, and long-lasting pavement is needed. There is a need for individuals who are knowledgeable in the special design and production requirements for this mix. This course fulfills requirements for certification of SMA mix design technicians performing work for the Georgia Department of Transportation and has an exam on the final morning.

NCAT staff are very familiar with requirements for SMA mixtures. Since its early beginnings in the U.S., NCAT has actively conducted much of the research that led to SMA becoming the premier asphalt mix of choice for use on high traffic volume facilities.

Goals and Objectives

The purpose of this workshop is to provide a basic understanding of SMA mix design. Attendees will acquire a knowledge of the state-of-the-practice for materials, mix design, construction, and specifications needed for a successful project.

Program Content

This workshop will consist of classroom lectures and discussion involving all phases of SMA construction as well as “hands-on” laboratory exercises to determine voids in coarse aggregate, volumetric properties, moisture susceptibility, rutting resistance, and other miscellaneous tests. The program agenda includes the following items:

  • - Introduction
  • - SMA Research
  • - Mix Design: materials selection, gradation, and design process including VCA testing
  • - Performance Testing: rutting resistance, draindown, and permeability
  • - SMA Production and Construction
  • - Specifications

Materials

Each participant will be provided a copy of QIP-122, Designing and Constructing SMA Mixtures-State of the Practice and a binder containing a print-out of all of the PowerPoint presentations. The participant will leave the course with materials needed for general reference when the need arises to design SMA asphalt mixtures.

Fees, Refunds, & Deadline

The registration fee of $550 includes the course materials and break refreshments. Pre-payment is required and must be received no later than 10 days prior to the start date of the course. Cancellations two weeks prior to the start date of the course will result in a refund less $100 processing fee. No refunds will be provided for a cancellation after that date. The costs for housing, food, and transportation are the responsibility of each participant.

Eligibility

Engineers, technicians, consultants, material suppliers, contractors, and others interested in learning more about the design, production, and placement of this premium asphalt mixture are invited to attend.

Continuing Education

The course will provide 2.0 CEUs or 20 Professional Development Hours.

Location

This course will be conducted at NCAT's research facility at 277 Technology Parkway in Auburn, Alabama. Hotel accommodations are close by.
