This is a four-day classroom and laboratory course (takes place over two half-days and three full days). The emphasis will be the accomplishment of the test procedures necessary to control the quality of HMA pavements. It will include a review of the HMA plant and how to produce quality HMA mixtures; volumetric analysis of HMA; a discussion of sampling of HMA mixtures - techniques for obtaining and handling samples and random sampling; and detailed review of the following tests: Rice & bulk specific gravity; laboratory compaction of HMA mixtures (Marshall & Superpave); determination of asphalt content by ignition and nuclear gauge; determination of gradation by extraction; determination of fine aggregate angularity and clay content (sand equivalent).
The Radiation Safety Course is a prerequisite for this course.
Registration fee: $550/student
Written retake: $150/student
The costs for housing, food, and transportation are the responsibility of each student.
Pre-payment and registration is required, and must be received no later than 10 days prior to the start date of the course.
Cancellations two weeks prior to the start date of the course will result in a complete refund of registration fee. No refunds will be provided for a cancellation after that date.
