The use of warm mix asphalt (WMA), reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), and reclaimed asphalt shingles (RAS) has significantly increased in recent years as a result of construction costs and environmental issues.  This course is designed to provide information useful for making decisions about the use of WMA, high RAP, and RAS and for designing mixes that include these products.  Information will be provided on testing, performance, and cost for each of these processes.  This course will be very useful for individuals involved in the HMA industry, including material producers, contractors, consultants, and various agency personnel.

Goals and Objectives:

The purpose of this 3-day workshop is to provide a basic understanding of the advantages of using WMA, high RAP, and RAS and to provide guidance in material testing and mix design.

Program Content:

This course consists of 3 days of intensive lectures, laboratory demonstrations, and hands-on training on use of WMA, high RAP, and RAS.  The course will be split between classroom lectures and hands-on work using these products in the laboratory.  There will also be an optional tour of the NCAT Pavement Test Track to observe the performance of test sections using WMA and high RAP.

A brief outline of the course follows:

Lecture:

  • Overview and discussion of WMA technologies

  • Sources and control of RAP and RAS

  • RAP/RAS properties

  • Mix design procedures

  • Performance tests: discussion of procedures

  • Production and placement of WMA/RAP/RAS

  • Guidance for field quality control/quality assurance

  • Observed performance of high RAP/RAS mixes

  • Observed performance of WMA mixes

  • Class exercise: economics of WMA/RAP/RAS

  • Proposed guide specifications for high RAP, WMA, etc.

  • Status of implementation and open discussion

Laboratory and Test Track
:

  • Handling various WMA technologies: foaming, chemical, organic

  • Performance test: observe performance test equipment and operation in the lab

  • Material testing and mix design

  • Tour of test track to see WMA and high RAP mixes (optional)

Materials:

Each participant will be provided a binder containing a print-out of all of the PowerPoint presentations and a CD containing the same.
