Why this certificate?

In the future, the projected population increase and associated increase in demand for food, water, and energy could potentially degrade nature’s ecosystem services. As a result, there is a need for trained ecological engineers with an understanding of the biological and ecological sciences. The Ecosystems Engineering Graduate Certificate, offered through the Department of Biosystems Engineering, will allow engineers to advance their knowledge in this area of study, which will impact quality of life in the near future. The program can be completed online or on campus, and is available to both degree-seeking and non-degree-seeking students.

You are eligible to apply if...

  • If a student is able to visit campus, the lab components may be completed through a one-week residency. Alternate arrangements can be made if a student cannot travel.
  • Upon program completion, students will be able to analyze and manage complex ecosystems by selecting and applying appropriate tools and techniques, analyze information in scientific literature related to ecosystems engineering for specific design objectives, and effectively communicate ecosystems engineering design through oral and written communication.

To complete the program you must...

Complete four courses in biosystems engineering (6000/7000 level) from the following list:

  • BSEN 6220: Geospatial Technologies for Biosystems (3)
  • BSEN 6560: Site Design for Biosystems (3)
  • BSEN 6510: Ecological Engineering (3)
  • BSEN 6520: Watershed Modeling (3)
  • BSEN 6230: Waste Management & Utilization for Biosystems (3)
  • BSEN 7970: Special Topics in Ecosystems Engineering (Ecosystems Restoration Engineering) (3)

Those that are also offered online have a corresponding listing with a course section beginning in "D" (e.g., BSEN 6220 Dxx). The course section will change from term to term.
