The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) holds on a yearly basis
many different automotive design and race competitions. These competitions include
colleges and universities all over the North American Continent. They range in form
from off-road baja cart design and competition to on-road, task performing "Walking
Machines".
SAE Collegiate Design Competitions put classroom
training into action by challenging students to design, build, and test the performance of
a real vehicle in a competitive environment. Many times this leads to interesting
and innovative techniques and strategies that make this competition not only education,
but fun.
Three regional competitions that challenge
engineering students to design and build an off-road vehicle that will survive the severe
punishment of rough terrain and in the East competition, water. The object of the
competition is to provide SAE student members with a challenging project that involves the
planning and manufacturing tasks found in introducing a new product to the consumer
industrial market. Standard 10 horsepower engines are donated by Briggs & Stratton.
